We are not sure how many diapers we need total.. We have about 37 changes..
Do you wash every other day?
Don't the diapers that you let sit get stained in the newborn stage?
Do you always was hot/hot with the rinse with detergent then another cycle cold/cold without detergent?
Sorry about all the question.. Just dont want to ruin my diapers..
Re: How offten do you wash?
You will be surprised how fast you go through 37 changes with a newborn. I remember many times where I would put a new diaper on Z, and literally the moment I carried her out of the room, she had pooped again.
In the newborn phase, I did laundry every other day. Now I do laundry every 3 days. I could go longer but I don't want them sitting there getting gross.
For washing - you need to do a cold rinse with no detergent to remove the poo, then a hot wash with a cold rinse (with detergent) plus an extra cold rinse. The extra rinse ensures that the detergent is completely out and not going to irritate your LO. If you washer doesn't have those features, you can do a cold cycle, hot with cold, then another cold.
HTH!
ETA: 37 changes is enough, but expect to do laundry every other day because that's how much they poop.
And as far as staining - newborn BF poo stains but it will sun out. Don't be worried if you see stains on your diapers, it is bound to happen. Washing every day vs. every other won't change that.
This. It definitely can.

This. I could go longer but then my load size would be too big to allow the diapers to really circulate and get clean in the washer and I don't want them to sit too long and "soak" in the wetbag.
When my daughter was a newborn, even through the first year, we washed every other day. Now we do every 3rd day or so.
I do cold rinse, hot wash with detergent, cold rinse.
Breastmilk poop washes off easily.
Katie Talks About...
We have about 35 pocket diapers. I wash them every 2-2.5 days (toddler pee STINKS!) or when our diaper pail is full (about 15-20 diapers).
DS eats all kinds of solids and has been on all sorts of medications that make nasty poop, but we have not run into a single stain yet, and I don't do anything fancy with my washing.
We have a front loading LG washer. I select permanent press with the following options set: water plus, extra rinse, hot/cold water temp, high spin speed, heavy soil level, and pre-wash. I use 2-3 Tbsp of Rockin Green Classic Rock detergent in every load. It takes about 2 hours from start to finish. I then dry the inserts on high and hang dry the pockets and pail liner. (Once or twice a month I run the pockets through the dryer to reseal the PUL.)
We wash every 2-3 days
I never notice stains much. Stuff stains. Who's going to see it?
I do a cold rinse, a hot/cold wash, and a cold rinse
