Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Stomach pain from rice Cereal?

I was told to give my DD rice cereal to help her sleep longer. We tried it last night and when I was feeding it to her she started screaming like she was in pain. She did calm down a little but then she cried for 4 hrs straight only taking like 10 min breaks.

Has anyone had this kind of reaction when feeding rice cereal? I am afraid to give it to her again.

Re: Stomach pain from rice Cereal?

  • Probably because babies younger than 3 months old can't digest cereal. WTF told you to give her cereal? I hope it was your pedi and for a good reason...

  • Yes I was told by the pedi because she is not sleeping well through the night and they thought that might help her. I will stop giving it to her for another month or so. I did not know they could have a problem digesting it.

That is so weird! My pedi just told me at our last appointment not to even think about starting cereal until 4 months because they can't digest it. He said it wouldn't help her sleep any better, that that is a myth.... sorry you guys had a rough night.

  • Thanks. I just started googling and read more about the rice cereal myth. I am done with it for now. And I am pissed I was told to do it. Thanks for responding as I never would have started looking into it more!

  • I was told to by my pedi but because of reflux...but my DD didn't do well with it either so I stopped. She just wouldn't eat and had even worse than normal gas.

yes, our GI specialist suggested we try it as well but only because of reflux!  She couldn't digest it either so we stopped as well.

I would question any pedi who suggested cereal because of sleep.  Sounds "old school" and not who I'd be taking my kids to.

  • Whoever told you this is a moron. At a month old, she needs to be waking up constantly. They will tell you that solids will help them sleep longer too, lie. Nothing will MAKE them sleep longer until they are ready. At this point, you just need to suck it up and be tired, its not going to last forever.
  • I would find a new pedi.

Why do you expect a not even 2 month old to sleep through the night?

  • Rice cereal at this age is not for everyone. Please remember, ladies, that all babies are different.

For us, however, it has been a lifesaver. DS has horrible reflux, as did my DD...he wasn't gaining weight, was already on Zantax, etc. We changed bottles, formulas, etc. With rice cereal in his bottle he is able to keep formula down, is gaining weight, etc.

Her DD does not have reflux. She said she was using it to get her to sleep longer, which does not work.

Glad your DS is doing well, but many mothers offer cereal before their child is ready because of this myth.

Also, this is a good link on white vs. brown rice cereal for mothers who do use it: https://www.usatoday.com/yourlife/parenting-family/babies/2010-12-01-babyfood01_st_N.htm

reflux wasn't the issue with this baby...it was how to get the kid to sleep longer.

  • DS was put on rice cereal for reflux around a month. I had been mixing it with his formula after BF because I didn't have enough milk for him. As soon as he started to keep everything down he grew like a weed. I had to stop BF for medical reasons, and I don't think I was going to be able to keep up with his 40+oz a day.

He has had cereal since a month, and he digests it just fine, it's pretty much what the AR formula is. He started to sleep for 6-7 hours around 8 weeks old, and just takes a 9oz bottle before bed, maybe more.

We're supposed to try Oatmeal cereal between 3-4 months to see if he can eat that. But the pedi said to give it to him with a spoon.  DS is close to doubling his birth weight and can sit up in a bumbo and keep his head up.

Some babies can digest cereal, but I wouldn't do it just to try to make him sleep.  DS has had it a few weeks before he was sleeping for long periods of time.

  • personally i would switch pedis- because that is MAJOR old school advice. and it is dangerous.

it doesn't help babies sleep any longer.
