Book Club

There seemed to be a lot of interest for a book club in another post.

I just wanted to get the ball rolling and see who was actually interested in something like this and if we should set one up and maybe pick a book?

Who else is interested?!

Yeah I think that would work.

We'd also have to decide on a time/date to come and discuss.

  • Is a month long enough for everyone to get a book done?  We could do the first of every month?  Also, what genre should we do?  Popular fiction?

I've been dying to read The Help, but I'm sure some of you  may have already read that.

I think a month long is the norm but the first might be a little too soon considering jan. is starting up soon already. maybe the 15th? So that way we can start here in a few days?

Also we can mark down "The Help" as the first suggestion to add to clicky poll

Edit:Perhaps the 1st would be better since the holidays are coming and no one has time to read a book and do everything us super moms are supposed to do!

  • I think we should pick a different genre every time, I am down to read any kind of book. My own personal favorite genre is fantasy/sci-fiction. I read lots of books that come in a series that way I have multiple books to look forward to.

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey by Walter Mosley

is my suggestion, sounds facinating to me.

      Synopsis

A masterful, moving novel about age, memory, and family from one of the true literary icons of our time.

Ptolemy Grey is ninety-one years old and has been all but forgotten-by his family, his friends, even himself-as he sinks into a lonely dementia. His grand-nephew, Ptolemy's only connection to the outside world, was recently killed in a drive-by shooting, and Ptolemy is too suspicious of anyone else to allow them into his life. until he meets Robyn, his niece's seventeen-year-old lodger and the only one willing to take care of an old man at his grandnephew's funeral.

But Robyn will not tolerate Ptolemy's hermitlike existence. She challenges him to interact more with the world around him, and he grasps more firmly onto his disappearing consciousness. However, this new activity pushes Ptolemy into the fold of a doctor touting an experimental drug that guarantees Ptolemy won't live to see age ninety- two but that he'll spend his last days in feverish vigor and clarity. With his mind clear, what Ptolemy finds-in his own past, in his own apartment, and in the circumstances surrounding his grand-nephew's death-is shocking enough to spur an old man to action, and to ensure a legacy that no one will forget.

In The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Mosley captures the compromised state of his protagonist's mind with profound sensitivity and insight, and creates an unforgettable pair of characters at the center of a novel that is sure to become a true contemporary classic.

    • O.k. so should we do a poll to make sure the 15th of every month is doable?

Also, we need more suggestions on books.  lol  Feel free to chime in everyone!

    • I make a suggestion for The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Former academic Setterfield pays tribute in her debut to Bront? and du Maurier heroines: a plain girl gets wrapped up in a dark, haunted ruin of a house, which guards family secrets that are not hers and that she must discover at her peril. Margaret Lea, a London bookseller's daughter, has written an obscure biography that suggests deep understanding of siblings. She is contacted by renowned aging author Vida Winter, who finally wishes to tell her own, long-hidden, life story. Margaret travels to Yorkshire, where she interviews the dying writer, walks the remains of her estate at Angelfield and tries to verify the old woman's tale of a governess, a ghost and more than one abandoned baby. With the aid of colorful Aurelius Love, Margaret puzzles out generations of Angelfield: destructive Uncle Charlie; his elusive sister, Isabelle; their unhappy parents; Isabelle's twin daughters, Adeline and Emmeline; and the children's caretakers. Contending with ghosts and with a (mostly) scary bunch of living people, Setterfield's sensible heroine is, like Jane Eyre, full of repressed feeling?and is unprepared for both heartache and romance. And like Jane, she's a real reader and makes a terrific narrator. That's where the comparisons end, but Setterfield, who lives in Yorkshire, offers graceful storytelling that has its own pleasures.

    • I'm in!  I like the idea of doing different genres, if we work off of everyone's suggestions we get to read a variety of books and maybe pick up something we normally wouldn't.  I read a lot of teen fiction, it seems to be written better than a lot of adult fiction.  For example"The Hunger Games" is considered teen fiction.  Anyway, I'm thinking we should name this book club as well, since eventually we will be moving onto different boards as our LOs grow. And also pick a couple of people who might want to keep it organized too.

I think its fine, I would technically be 3-6 too, but my rationale is that its through the third month so when shes 4 months I will transition to the 3-6 mo board haha.

I think what we'll do since its Friday and most of the peeps who bump on here are mon-fri people I'm going to suggest that we let some more recommendations come in over the weekend. (either post them here... I'm watching the post! Or PM them to me and I'll keep track) and then on Monday morning we'll post a clicky poll to vote on the book.

Does that sound good to everyone?

    • I have to run to pick up my daughter right now but we could call ourselves the 2010 Mommies Book Club, I know it's generic but it's what I could come up with off the top of my head.  Any volunteers to help organize? I was thinking two or three people who could post dicussions and who everyone else could contact to with suggestions/questions.  I'll check back later and see what you guys came up with.

Some books that I've heard about that might be good for this...

      Room, by Emma Donoghue

Heart of the Matter, by Emily Griffin

      House Rules, Jodi Picuolt

    • Hmmm...I am semi interested. It depends on the book. If it's some girly book about this one doing this other one's DH on the down low, I am not in. Not into those kinds of stories.
