We bought DD an easel for her 1st birthday. It has a chalkboard on one side and a wipe off board on the other side. We got her some of the oversized sidewalk chalk and she loves playing with that! We just have to be careful because then she walks around with the chalk and wants to draw on things other than the easel.
Just bought Cedric one from IKEA. White board on one side, chalk on the other, and a roll of paper that goes over it. I've only let him use the chalk so far, but he likes it and is almost 15 months.

15 mths is a perfect age for an easel. The twin boys I watched loved playing with their easel. One would be on one side using the chalk board and the other would be on the marker side.
