I've found a couple websites, but I have no idea how to tell a good pattern from a bad one, and I have no baby to try them on yet
I'd like to make some NB ones to start. I am also not sure about fabrics to use and what kind of layers need to go on the inside.
I appreciate any websites or just sharing anything you've learned from your experience. Thanks!!
Re: Do you make your CD's? Please help me get started!
The 2 websites I've bought fabric/notions from are verybaby.com and kidsinthegarden.com. I have made my own patterns (my mom is a home ec teacher and local so able to help me with this) using a couple of Thirsties covers and inserts to model from. I know verybaby.com has patterns for sale, but I haven't used them.
The basics you'll need to know is 1. What type of diapers you want to make- AIO's, pockets, covers, and then inserts or fitteds. 2. What type of cloth you want to use- cotton, flannel, microfiber, and/or hemp for inserts/fitteds; fleece, wool, or PUL for the outer cover. Lastly, what kind of notions you'll need- whether your do snaps or aplix, if you want a one size adjustable diaper or make each size as yoru baby grows. Either way, you'll need elastic, thread, the fasteners (aplix or snaps w/a snap press).
Both of the above websites have some sewing/cloth suggestions and guidelines. I believe there are a few more links in the FAQ.
the way i started making them was noticing things i liked/didn't like about the dipes we were using. i developed my own pattern to improve on what i liked/didn't about the ones we were using. i used the fabrics i most liked based on experience, which for me is obv and bamboo fleece.
if you don't have a serger i highly recommend getting one if you're going to be making fitteds. it will cut your time in half
