I'm planning to just get a manual, as I won't be returning to work for a year and don't plan to pump a TON - just enough to get some sleep or go out without baby once in a while.
Baby Bargains recommends either Medela Harmony or Avent Isis.
I wouldn't buy a serious (like, double electric) pump until after the baby arrives and you've established breastfeeding. Pumps are generally unreturnable if it doesn't work out. Also, check your insurance to see if they'll pay - some do.
I haven't used one yet, but it was a big concern of mine so I asked my dr for a recommendation. She suggested renting one from the hospital at first to make sure you can even do it. Some women just can't for whatever reason, others can only for a month or two or four. The Dr said why pay 2-300 for something you might not be able to use. She also mentiond that lesser models aren't worth the time and effort, they are more frustrating then necessary. My hospital rents the hospital grade ones for $20 a month. If I have luck, then we'll talk to the lactation consultant about what models will be best for our situation. My Dr mentioned that we have enough stuff to buy for the baby, save yourself the 2-300 until you're sure its worth it.
My hospital has a program where you can rent a hospital grade pump for a month at a time. I did that with DS and after a month I bought a Medela pump in style advance. I was really happy with that pump. Expensive but cheaper than formula!
If you have Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield they typically will reimburse you the cost of a pump and your childbirth class. If you are returning to work and will need to pump on a regular basis, then I would suggest a double electric pump. Medela Pump in Style or the Hygeia EnJoye are both good brands. If you have any trouble with your milk supply then I would suggest renting a hospital grade to use. I work in a NICU and a lot of our moms say that renting the hospital grade saved their milk supply and that their insurance covered the rental with a doctors note. Hope that helps!
