This. You could use a name similar to Vienna maybe...What about Vivian? Every child will someday ask, "mom, how did you come up with my name?" I think that the last thing you would want to say is "we named a former dog Vienna because she was fat like a sausage and decided that it would be a good name for you"
Sorry, but this was my thought, too. "Mom, you named me after a dog which was named because it was fat like a sausage?!" I can't see that conversation going well. I absolutely love Julianna, though.
Trigger Warning (LC and loss) --
Married May 2008
Beautiful daughter Alyssa born April 23, 2011
Precious son Isaac born at 34 weeks in April 27, 2014 with Potters Syndrome Type 4 and Down Syndrome - trusted into the arms of Jesus after 3 hours.
Pregnant again! Due August 8, 2015 please be healthy, little one!
(results on 2/4/15 showed no Down's and it's a girl!)
I don't see why it would be weird hun. If it's a name you both like, and it also has lovely sentimental connections, then it's perfect in my opinion.
Animals are just as valid as human beings, and in many cases, much better people, so if your only objection is naming your child after a dog, then I think it's an honour to your dog, and your little girl.
Plus it's a beautiful unique name. Some of our possible names have come from pets, whom we loved, and whose names we love. No problem there.
So I am named after a dog who passed away right before I was born. My name it Tina. It doesn't really bother me. But I have a really silly sense of humor. If you end up having a really serious kid, it might be embarassing. Although, it's not like anyone asks me how my name was picked out so unless she brings it up it's no big deal.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR STORY!!!! of course I am the one who wanted to name my daugther after my ferret which passed away one month before she was born!!!!
I understand loving a pet! My dog is my baby! But there is no way when she passes that I'm going to name my daughter after her. I think that every child deserves their own unique name. If your husband is set on it, maybe Vienna as a middle name?
Well, we also named our child after DH's dog. The dog's name was Jack, and DH just loves the name. Our DS is named Jack Archer. My DH picked his name, and it was just "coincidentally" the name of his late dog, too. I guess he just liked the name! I wasn't crazy about it at first, but it's growing on me! I got to name both of our daughters, so I felt like I should let him choose Jack's name (within reason). My family thought we were crazy, but we did it anyway.
I think you are all being just a little too harsh. There may be more too it than just liking the name. For example, we named our cat Rocky because he was tough and muscular since a kitten and Rocky is our favorite movie. We got another cat and named him Mick because once Rocky got a little older he got lazy but Mick keeps him playing and in shape, like Rocky's trainer.
Now that we want to start a family, we can't decide on a boy's name. My DH's grandfather's name was Rocky Porter and he was a famous country-western singer many many years ago. I also like the name Rocco but DH says it's a touch too Italian (to which I say "So?" but we both have to be happy). We *never* expected to be considering a name that is the same as one of our pets...but different circumstances will dictate different types of decision-making.
OP, is there *any* other reason you like the name Vienna besides now knowing what else to pick?
Obviously, as you can tell by the replies you have received, some people are going to think it is weird. Some people are not. In the end, all that matters is that you and your husband love it. People are always judgmental about baby names. For example, I am sure some of the ppl on here who replied negatively named their kid something you may think is way too generic, or is spelled strangely....and you think "who in the heck would name their kid _____"? I really think that you only explain your baby's name for the first few months anyways...unless you have a "made-up" name that people will always question.
My husband and I used our favorite girl name on our first dog we got together in college. Sadie is still alive and now that we are expecting, DH kept bringing up naming our girl Sadie. I am only ok with it once the dog has passed...I can't keep screaming my dog's name and scaring a toddler!
Name your kid what is special to you and your hubby...no matter what you pick, you are going to find some people who disagree or think it is weird. GL!
We fostered a dog and named her Abi and now we are naming our baby girl Abigail with the nick name Abby...so no, it's not weird especially if you like the name!
When we were trying to name our daughter, we were going to name her Samantha Marie. However, that's the name of my first dog (who had passed YEARS before). She wasn't going to be named AFTER the dog, but they just would have had the same name.
When it came time to fill out the Birth Certificate, I couldn't bring myself to put "Samantha Marie" down on the form. I said that whenever I would have to yell at her when she was older, I'd feel like I was yelling at the dog!
I also wanted to name her Abigail, but DH said that there was no way he was naming her after our neighbor's dog. (Which wasn't the case. I was really big into ER at the time, and just LOVED Abby, and I loved the old, classic name.)
I think that it's a beautiful name, and if you BOTH like it, and you can BOTH get past the feeling that you're still talking to your doggie then go for it. I don't know that she should be named AFTER your dog. That's might be a little.... different... But having the same name might not be so bad. And if you have to cross the bridge of "How did you decide on my name?" you can just say that it was a name that you and daddy really loved... And maybe hope that the other kiddos don't remember the name of the doggie! :-)
My dogs name is Sophia, I named her that because I love the name and like saying it. When I got pregnant everyone kept telling me I can't name my baby Sophia because they knew how much I loved the name. Luckily I am having a boy :-) I think it is very common for people to name their dogs names they love and if the dog is no longer around I don't think it is weird to give your baby a name you love. I think most of the people who think it is weird are thinking you are naming the baby after your dog like you would name a baby after a grandparent, but to me it seems that you have a name you love, and you want to keep using it. I think loving the name, the way it sounds and feeling like it fits the personality you want your baby to have is important. So I say use the name you love. Mahlia and Vienna sound beautiful as a sibling set, both are elegant and unique. Best of luck!
Okay, I'll stand up and be the odd ball. I don't think it's weird. I'm actually doing something similar. I had a golden who died when he was 4 due to a genetic heart defect. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through because I loved him with every ounce of my being. I'm having a little boy and although I'm not naming him exactly what my dog was named, Kadence, I am going to name him Kaden after Kadence. He taught me a lot about patience and loving unconditionally. My husband understands and is completely okay with it. Had Kadence's name been Spot or another "doggy name" then I wouldn't have even suggested it.
When we were trying to figure out a name for this baby, I kept thinking of my dogs. We have four Dixie, Evie, Bailie, and Tobie. Evie is our little princess and that's what name kept popping into my head. I had a really tough time thinking of any other name. We finally found the name Nora and loved it. I have worked with a lot of animals, and I just think that it's strange to name your next pet the same name as your former pet. For example, I had a client who had like 6 dogs named Willy. When one would die he would just go get another St. Brenard and name it Willy. To me, each animal or person should have their own name, not the name of a former member of the family. So even though when we were trying to think of a name for Nora, and Evie kept coming to mind, I wouldn't name any of my children Evie. Because Evie will always be known as my first "child".
Hope that helps you some and makes some sense.
If you are needing help with names go to babynames.com and make a list so that people can vote on what name they like the best. That ruled in and out some choses for us.
We did the same thing too! Our dog's name is Olive, I love the name, but think using Olivia for a middle name four our baby might not be too close. So maybe you could change it a little and use it for a middle name instead?
Go for it!! My husband wants to name our daughter (due end of March) after his first dog, Luci, BUT only if our daughter is born on Luci's bday - which happens to be April fools day. No joke! But, I told him, why not!?
People who don't get what pets mean to us as companions are going to think that's weird, just like they think when your pet dies you should just get a new one. Not everyone is going to get or agree with it, but I think it's beautiful. What matters is what the name means to you and your husband. I consider naming my baby about my old cat who is still living partially because she won't be with us much longer.
My black lab's name is Mason and I would totally consider using it if I had a son. It's odd, but my dog has been my constant (as strange as that sounds) for the past 12 years. My boyfriend completely understand why I would want to name our son that too, and he's okay with it.
Maybe we're just in that "we love our dogs like their family" group, where only other people who feel the same was as us will understand. Vienna is a pretty name and people won't automatically say, "Hey! That's a dog's name!" Only your close friends and family will know about your pup, and they'll probably understand why you named her that.
We name our kids after relatives, so this just doesn't seem too crazy for me.
Since you both love the name Vienna...and it's kinda wrong to name a child after dog, how about making a variation of the name instead. I agree with most of the posts that people have submitted. Vienna Sausage is what she will be called at school. Kids are cruel.
Here is my variation suggestion: Viella or Vianna
In the end, do what makes you and your hubby happy.
What are the names of your other daughters, maybe start there and get suggestions for what sounds good with the other names. I dont think your daughter would be offended if she knew the circumstances. I'm sure your husband loved that dog a lot. I dont like my name but thats because my mom got it from a man who she was possibly a mistress to, but it's still my name. Just goes to show you the origin of her name could be a lot worse! Good luck!
I was named after my mom's dead dog (Candy) and i wouldn't have it any other way. My full name is Candace, but I'm called Candy by my family. I love my name! Mahlia and Vienna...cute!
I have wasted a lot of cute names on pets! I thought about recycling but can't get my head around reusing a name I associate with a furbaby. If you love the name, and the dog is no longer here (sorry ) then i guess you should go for it! I just personally couldn't..
This is why we named our cats Gigabyte and Terabyte (Tera for short). NO chance that we'd ever want to use them as kids names.
I think it is a little weird to re-use the name, especially since other will know that your DH's dog was named Vienna.
You're considering naming your child after a dog that was named after Vienna sausages cause she was fat? Tell your husband to say that a few times to himself and if it doesn't sound odd to him, then I'd say do it.
My aunt and uncle wanted "easy" names for their kids... Nicolas (Nick), Tucker (Tuck), and when the third came along, the only thing they could agree upon was Max (just plain Max - not short for anything) which was the name of their then 8 yr old golden retriever! Needless to say, family members thought it was rather odd that they named their child after the dog who ended up living through most of the boy's childhood : P
if you love the name use it. If you are you think its weird or are afraid that others might think its weird.. don't tell them.
We may consider naming one of our kids the same as our dog. We named our dog Blackjack. But blackjack has eventally become just jack (approriate hand motions). Jack was also my grandfather. We never intended to name the dog jack but thats who he is now and we may reuse the name for a kid b/c of my grandfather. Maybe... we haven't decided.
i think its fine. I hope it is, because we might be doing that. without thinking i used my favorite name on my cat and i was going to let it go, but that is the ONLY name my husband likes (Stella).
Vienna is a pretty name, and a gorgeous city, I hear.
I've had a passing thought about the same situation.. but that was just it, a passing thought! We had an adorable little Boston Terrier "Lucy", and after we gave her up I realized I screwed myself bc I love that name for a lil girl. As cute as it is, your lil one deserves her own uniquely, beautiful name!

we are in the "we love our dog like our family" group as well, but i think this is way extreme. i would be pretty pissed off if my parents named me after their fat sausage, dead dog.
but hey, if you guys like it, go for it. you're the one that has to explain that to her someday.
I don't think it's that big of a deal. My sisters want me to name the baby Greta, which is my dog's name, and then change the dog's name to something else. I think that's much more weird.
I may have commented before, I know this thread has been kicking around for a few days. So, if I have, my apologies.
Personally I would try and find a name that sounds like Vienna, I saw a PP suggested Sienna, or what about Vivienne. That way you are "honoring" the dog, if that is your intention, but you are not using the exact same name.
Our cats are like our family but I would never consider naming a child after them. DH and I both really liked the name Elise, but realized her nn would be Ellie, which is the name of MIL's dog, so that was nixed.
Ultimately it's up to you but I would think twice about it. What kind of responses do you think your DD will get when they tell people they were named after the family dog...who looked like a vienna sausage?
its not that its weird... i totally get the loving our animals thing... my shelby is like my baby girl... sure she's a dog but i still consider her part of the family and i tell her she's getting a baby brother... not that she understands but its funny... but i would never rename anything shelby... not another dog, animal, or child... its HER name... it would be like i was trying to replace her if i were to do that... thats just me...
Not weird at all! My son's middle name is that of my beloved goldfish who died when I was 7 mos pregnant with him. Everyone gave me grief, but I had Mr. Wilson for 8 years, and so, my son is Carter Wilson. Following in that tradition, my daughter is named after my cat who died while I was pregnant with her...Lucy Bennett. People give me crap about both, but I love their names!!!
Our daughter Abby is named after my old family dog. She was a big part of the family when I was growing up and I have always loved the name. I think Vienna is a beautiful name and its a great way to remember a past "family" member.
I get that dogs are like family - our pets are our babies, too - but I think your daughter deserves her own unique name.

Would YOU want to be named after a dog? I don't think so and neither would I. My sister wanted to name me after our pet cat. Thankfully she didn't get her way and my name is not Caesar. Go with the other name or pick another. She will thank you for it and you might save her from getting teased about being a sausage.
Re: naming child after dog who passed-too weird?
Sorry, but this was my thought, too. "Mom, you named me after a dog which was named because it was fat like a sausage?!" I can't see that conversation going well.
I absolutely love Julianna, though.

I'm a lurker, but this caught my interest.

I wanted to propose the same thing, I love that name, Sienna ! (and it makes people think about Ms Miller more than a saucage or a dog...)
If this was the case, NO WAY!!! lol
I was named after my mom's dead dog (Candy) and i wouldn't have it any other way. My full name is Candace, but I'm called Candy by my family. I love my name! Mahlia and Vienna...cute!

The both of them sharing a name is not weird, however naming your child after the dog is a little odd.
If you like the name, don't worry about what everyone else thinks, use it!
But just keep in mind, that every time you say your child's name, you might think of a chubby little dog.
Our daughter Abby is named after my old family dog. She was a big part of the family when I was growing up and I have always loved the name. I think Vienna is a beautiful name and its a great way to remember a past "family" member.
