What age do they no longer use a stroller

I am so sorry if this questions gets asked all the time. I looked through a few pages of posts and didn't see anything.

At what age did your LO stop sitting/riding in the stroller?

I am very early in my first pregnancy, but I am starting to look at strollers. I am in love with the BJ City Select, but the only reason I would justify spending that amount of money is that I will be able to use it as a double when we have #2.

However, there will probably be at least 3 years between #1 and #2. So I am wondering if my oldest is 3-4 years old will they even be riding in the stroller?

Your insight is greatly appreciated. TIA!

  • DS refused to sit in a stroller at about 2.5 years.  DD is still using hers at 2 years and loves riding in it.  I think it all depends on your child.

  • DS will be 4 in April and still rides in his sometimes.

  • depends on the child and your lifestyle.

dd is almost 5 , ds is 3.  if we go into manhattan, sometimes they want to ride, sometimes they don't.  neither want to sit for power walks in the park. they want to walk.  neither want to walk in the mall .  dd just this year (age 4) started to request every single time we go to the mall or zoo to walk , ds already prefers walking (started a few months before he turned 3, he may have fed off his sister's requests).   a friend's dd started refusing and throwing fits at 18 m.. the girl had to walk. and she did. she didn't want to be carried or ride in a stroller.

  • DD1 is three and still sits in the stroller. When we go for walks, she usually wants to walk on her own but sometimes asks to sit in the stroller. When we're out shopping, even if she prefers to walk, I like to keep her contained in the stroller. Otherwise it adds a good 10-20 minutes to our shopping trips just trying to keep her close to me.

That said, most of the time I just use our single stroller for DD1 and carry DD2 in my Ergo. Our double stroller is a BOB which is great when I take the girls on walks or runs, but it's way too big for most shopping trips. I might not have gotten a double stroller if we didn't need it for running or traveling.

  • My DD is 3.5. She only uses the stroller for events that have a lot of walking (like Sea World). She prefers to walk 99.9% of the time.

  • My son is 3 and rides in the stroller any time there is a significant amount of walking.  I think you definitely still need a stroller when they are 3 because there are times where they get tired and want to sleep or it's just too much walking.

I also have the BJ City Select.  My kids are 3 years apart so I can tell you my experience so far.  It's a great stroller if we're walking a long distance but I find that rarely happens (I think I've used it 3 times).   I find if we're just doing errands or walking a short distance, it is easier to use the Bjorn for the baby and push an umbrella stroller for my son.  If we're in Target or a store that has carts, I definitely want my son in the cart and carry the baby.

The City Select is very big, heavy and bulky when you have a 3 year old and an infant in it.  If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have gotten such a heavy stroller.  It is hard to maneuver with a toddler in the front.  If we hit a bump/curb, I have to use my foot to lift the stroller up over the curb. However, I love having the infant up high near me- that is a nice feature.

I don't want to talk you out of the stroller though- it was definitely helpful when I was alone with both kids and my son wanted to be in the "comfy" stroller (he calls it the comfy stroller).  I just found that either my dh was with me and we could each have a smaller stroller or if I was alone, it was easier to carry the baby.

  • I should add, we didn't buy a double until ds (my #2) was 9 months old.   my dc are 19 months apart.   until then I carried him in a sling or bjorn and dd rode in the stroller. or if we were somewhere she wanted to walk, ds would go in the stroller and she'd walk. if I needed to get moving quick b/c dd was acting up, or for whatever reason, I kept a hotsling in my diaper bag to hip sling dd (#1) while ds(#2) rode in the stroller.  when we got a double, we opted for the Phil & Ted sport with the jumpseat.  I love it.  Have been very satisfied.  jealous of the newest model (explorer?) ... sounds like they've fixed the few flaws I saw.
  • It really depends on your lifestyle.  We really didn't use a stroller much.  We live in the country, so walks with a stroller just aren't easy.  We stopped using a stroller at the mall and places like the zoo around the time she was 3, because she was walking more than she was riding, and walking is good exercise (plus she is really good at staying with us in stores and in public).

  • around 3y/o griffin didn't spend much time in a stroller.... he has been in one twice in the past year that i can think of --- both were LONG events we went to and knew he'd need to sit.

most of the time he either walks or stands on the hitch hiker board attached to my Select that the twins are in.

  • The girls are almost 3 and 4.5.  They rarely ride in the stroller anymore.  DD#2 will sometimes ask to get in if she's getting tired.  She stopped really early (like less than 2) just because she wanted to walk with DD#1, but lately she's been back in the mood for it (probably because we just got back from Disney and there was a lot of walking so she rode a lot more).  There are days like at Disney or even just at the mall or zoo when DD#1 even still gets tired and wants to ride.  It's rare, but it happens.  I got a regular double stroller when DD#2 was born but DD#1 was only 20 months so we needed it.  We probably used it about a year before DD#1 wasn't riding much at all.  We've got the sit-n-stand type now and that's perfect for my kids' ages.
  • depends on your kid.  DD was still using a stroller and still does but tends to hop in and out ALL.THE.TIME.  I ended up switching from out P&T (a gift) to a sit n' stand type because DS was so heavy that when DD would get out (which always required out assistance so it was a pain for us too), the thing would start to tip back.

  • My kids are 2 1/2 (3 in March) and 4 1/2.  The last time we used a stroller with them was at the State Fair in August.  Before that, it was only when we went places like the zoo or the airport and even then, the kids only sat in it for brief times.  I think my younger DD would still use it if offered but honestly, she loves to walk and be like her big sister who just won't use it now unless she is really tired.  My older DD was in it longer since we did use a double stroller when my younger DD was a baby.  I am guessing that by the age of 2, I was not using it very often - at this point, I would only use it for things like the airport and then more so to keep my LO in one place or to hold bags while the kids walked next to me.

  • I bought a Phil and Ted's when DD1 was about 2 since were were TTC and her previous stroller was not good in snow. I now have DD2 and DD1 barely rides in the stroller anymore. I do however love having the option of the second seat and once in awhile DD1 will ask to ride in it.

(You can see in my siggy DD1 is 4 and DD2 is 5 months)

  • DS stopped using the stroller around 3.5.  I recently took it to the airport when we were going on a flight, and DS refused to sit in it.   He wanted to walk around, so I used it to hold my backpack.  I'm not bothering with a double stroller with my new LO coming in January.
