Baby Names

I never post here but...

DH and I both love the name Grant.

Issue is that the middle name has to be John.

How awful is Grant John?

(I'm pretty sure its super awful - sigh)

  • I don't think it is super awful. It is better not to have two one syllable names, but if you love both names then I don't think it is a deal breaker. No one really uses their middle name anyway.

Agreed. Now it makes sense as to why it sounds so ridiculous ;)

Eh, my fathers name is just 'John' so I feel like 'Jonathon' loses that in translation a bit. But, it sounds way better!

  • It just doesn't flow very well because they're both one syllable. However, since the middle name is hardly ever used I might still do it if I was in love with the first name.

  • The only thing wrong with it that I see is both names are single syllables.

What about Grant Jonathan?  Or Jonah or Jonas or James?  (I can't think of a name that Grant could be a nn for, but even something like Grayson John sounds better simple because it has multiple syllables)

What about using a second MN along with John?  Something like Grant Louis John, or Grant John Robert to soften the two names.

But DH and I very rarely use DS's MN, so I don't think it's something you need to be super stressed over.

  • Do you have a 2+ syllable last name?  The only reason I'd totally nix Grant John is if your last name is one syllable.

I also like the Grant Johnathan suggestion.

  • I think Grant John sounds good with your last name, actually. And honestly, how often would you call him by JUST his first and middle name? I think it's a solid name. :)

  • My nephew is Grant John. Grant because they liked it. John because it's his Dad's name. Our last name has more syllables though so it works.

I think it's fine. Maybe a little choppy but they're nice normal names, so it makes up for it! :)

  • I really LOVE the name Grant! :)

I agree with you that Grant John doesn't sound terribly great, but you know, it isn't HORRIBLE. Plus, I love John and it also depends on the last name.

Grant John Dickenson doesn't sound terrible. It sounds nice, actually.

Grant John Jones doesn't sound good at all.

If all else fails, Grant Jonathan has a nice ring to it. :)

  • Thanks for your awesome suggestions ladies :)

My last name is two syllables so I guess that does help a bit.

I appreciate all of your input!

  • It's a little choppy but I think that having a first name you both love and a middle name that is meaningful is more important.  Go for it!
  • Is there a way he could have two middle names (ex. Grant John William.) It just sounds like you need another syllable or two in there. Maybe you could use a family name in there, along with John? Just a suggestion if you want to keep both Grant and John.

    This EXACTLY.

  • It's not horrible. I think Grant Jonathan flows much better though. Even though your dad's name is just John I think it is obviously still a tribute to him. I can't imagine anyone not "getting it".
