TTC after 35

TTC, breastfeeding, and m/c history

Hi there, My DH and I have decided to TTC now.  I wanted to wait until my son turned 1, so now we are a go.  I am trying to decide whether or not to wean now, or just wait until the second trimester when experts say that babies will naturally wean.

I saw an article on the internet that says that breastfeeding can increase the risk of a m/c.

Do you know if this is true? Any Advice?

Re: TTC, breastfeeding, and m/c history

  • Welcome!

When to wean is a pretty individual decision.  Neither of my two were ready until around 16-18 months.  Most of what I have read has said that ovulation is suppressed while you are still exclusively breastfeeding, but now that your baby is taking a lot of table foods you may see ovulation return.  Have you been temping at all to see if you are ovulating yet?

I know many of us on this board have time constraints and feel the biological clock ticking for us, but most medical experts recommend spacing your births by at least two years to allow maximum recovery for your body and to maintain a healthy pregnancy.  Not sure about BF increasing risk of m/c.

  • Well I am still bf'ing and I did just have a miscarriage but the two are completely unrelated. The embryo just stopped growing, bf'ing had nothing to do with that. No articles I read on miscarriage (and I read a bunch) cited bf'ing as a contributing cause of miscarriages.

I think the only reason to wean for TTC would be if you haven't started ovulating yet.

  • I just weaned DD at 21 months to get ready for our next round with the RE.  I am SO upset about it and she seems pretty upset about it too (but she is adjusting faster than I am).  With DD I had to do meds and IUI and I just don't want those meds in her system.  If I was able to get pregnant on my own, then I would not have weaned, but oh well.  We see the RE on the 17th and I wanted DD weaned by then, so I would not have to do it all of a sudden, you know?  But I miss it :(

  • I stopped bfing when my son was 11 months, but I had started ovulating around when he was 8 months old.  I got pregnant on his 1st birthday but had a m/c.  I don't think m/c and bfing are related.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks Ladies,

I am ovulating now.  I am now down to 3 feeding a day of nursing, in the morning, when I get home from work and at bedtime. I love nursing, it is such a special time for Drew and I, but I want to have another baby too.

The article I saw said that nursing pulled too much nutrients from the fetus, but it did not sound too medically sound, so I was wondering if you ladies heard anything.

You are right, I feel my biological clock ticking, since I would like to have 3 children, with only 1 down.
