Cloth Diapering

Help me, pocket diapers? Why?

Okay I am still trying to find out the benefits to pocket diapers after 6 months of cloth diapering. Most of the time I just end up using them as covers so I can reuse them, and just putting the insert on top instead of inside. What is so great about pocket diapers, if you have to buy the pocket diaper and then buy inserts to go in it? Also, I know people use them for overnight but my son is still way too heavy of a wetter to CD overnight. Am I missing something?

  • First off, you shouldn't put microfiber inserts against LO's skin.  They need that fleece layer as protection because the MF wicks all of the moisture out of their skin.

Pocket diapers come with inserts, so you don't have to buy the two separately.

What's so great IMO is that you get the ease of an AIO but they dry faster and you can adjust the absorbency if you need to.

I've been using a pocket diaper overnight lately -- a FB with two MF inserts and one hemp insert.  DS sleeps 11-12 hours in that.  It's bulky but it does the trick and he's still dry when he wakes up.

  • I use them for daycare.  Easy and just like a disposable once they're all stuffed.  I personally wouldn't want to use them as a cover because the pocket fleece/microsuede would also get wet with pee and IMO not be usuable again.  That's just me.

  • Microfiber can't be against skin and you can't reuse a diaper with pee on it.

Ok so weird, I have to HH pockets, and a tweedlebugs pocket and none of them came with inserts. I don't know if its because I bought them on deal-of-the-day sites maybe? I don't use microfiber inserts really, I have one flip insert, but the rest are hemp/cotton/bamboo. I've tried twice to put a pocket on DS overnight, I can't remember what I used the first time, but the second time I used a SuperDo insert with a hemp booster in the middle of it, and when he woke at 4 AM to nurse he was soaked completely down the front, I had to change him and change the bedsheets, and that is when I gave up trying to use cloth at night.

Okay, I'm not doing either of these things...?

  • I guess it makes more sense if I actually had bought pocket diapers that came with inserts, guess I should do my research! Is there a pocket diaper I should try besides the happy heinies and the tweedlebugs?

  • For DD we only use pockets. I love them. I would recommend trying Bum Genius 4.0 and Knickernappies. For overnight I really like my doopsy SD and also our Kawaii pockets. I would try those. :)

  • It sounds like you would like AI2's. Try softbums.

  • You reuse them? Isn't the inner layer wet?

Agree with the pps that one of the advantages is adjustable absorbency. DD is a heavy wetter, so I can put a hemp and MF insert into the pocket and let her go for a reasonable amount of time. And when the inserts are out for washing, they dry pretty quickly, esp compared to AIOs.

Almost all of my pockets have come with inserts.

You may have to adjust absorbency for overnight, DD is in 2-3 layers of hemp or hemp blend and a layer of MF in her pocket for overnight. Works like a charm

No the inner fabric layer isn't wet, if it is I don't use it, but I change pretty often during the day and I always check to see if it needs to be changed and it usually doesn't. I have to say too I hardly ever use the pockets I have because I would rather use an AI2, that's why I posted this, to see if I could do something different so I would like them more. My favorites are Softbums and a local WAHM AI2, but I have these 4 pockets and I don't know what to do with them except use them in a pinch when my AI2's are in the wash. I don't have much of a stash yet.

  • Softbums are one of my favorites too, but I LOVE BumGenius 4.0's as well.  Tabbi slept from 7:30pm to 4am in one without leaks and is a heavy wetter.  I would look for a used 3.0 to just try.  You may find you love those too!

We love our BG 4.0 and also Flips. GL!

  • I like fuzzi bunz pockets and BG 4.0 but fitteds are my favorite. I only used pockets at night for a few weeks then we went back to sposies. We've since found a bulletproof solution. Good luck. :)

  • I really love the Thirsties DUO pocket.  I thought I would like my BG AIO better but I love the Thirsties.  You don't have to remove the inserts (it comes with 2 snapped together which my son sleeps in with no problems)...they agitate out in the wash.  They are soft and cozy and you only need 2 sizes.  I have also ordered some Kawaii's because of the great recommendations and price.
  • We only use BG 4.0 pockets, and I love them. Overnight, I use the thick mf insert (it comes with 2 different inserts) with two hemp inserts and she's dry after 12 hours.
