We're planning to get a convertible crib because we want to be able to use the furniture through childhood - I'm wondering whether it's necessary to buy the toddler guardrail and the bed rails when we buy the crib. Or is it possible to just make the conversions without these extra pieces (ie, use as a toddler bed without a guardrail, use as a headboard/footboard without wood rails by attaching to metal boxspring frame)? Has anyone done this? Thanks!

Re: Convertible crib - buy the toddler guardrail and bed rails?
We bought the bed rails but not the toddler one. We'll either not use that, or we'll just buy one of the ones you can add to a normal bed.
YOu can convert the beds without the bed rails, I think, although they told me I'd just be able to attach the headboard, not the footboard, to a metal frame. We opted to go for the whole thing.
I would buy it all at once for fear of the crib being discontinued. Our crib was a discontinued model so we really only had the one shot.
This. We got them and figured its one less thing we would have to worry about later!
YES!! Don't do like we did, bought the crib then it got discontinued (older model...babi italia pinehurst) and I was scrambling calling every BRU in the state to find it. Also if you want matching pieces buy them together...had to scramble to find those too! Although, I did luck out bc we bought it all for MUCH cheaper.
