2nd Trimester

Anyone have a 4 hour fast for the GD test?

I've opted for a 4hour fast for the GD exam.  Has anyone else had this done (and passed the test)???

It just seems weird to me that they offer a midnight til morning fast then test, and a 4 hour afternoon fast then test... Am I setting myself up for failure?

Re: Anyone have a 4 hour fast for the GD test?

  • That's not even offered here.  I've had many GTT's and my 3-Hour test has always been a 12 hour fast.

I'm not sure if you're setting yourself up for failure or not, but I do believe that fasting prior to a 3-hr test is important because they need to get a fasting blood sugar. This will be one of the 4 blood draws that play into the test.  I believe if you fail 2 or more blood draws you will then be diagnosed with GD.  Do you really want to risk potentially failing the fasting draw? Seems that would be the one you may fail with a 4 hour fast vs. a 12 hour fast.

  • My test is next week and I can't eat for 2 hours before I come and just nothing sugary at all that day before the test. I think you'll be fine.

Even more interesting! Most 1-hours are non-fasting, eat a normal meal before hand, kind of tests. But not all. Definitely follow docs orders.

I just did a 1 hour a few weeks ago. I ate breakfast at 7:30 and did my test at 10am....not quite 4 hours.... Definitely follow the docs recommendations.  Sorry I wasn't clear on the kind of test you are having!

  • I had mine yesterday and didn't have to fast. Went into the doc's office for my regular appt, she gave me a little bottle of red "juice" and I had to drink it within 5 minutes, then went to the lab waited an hour, they drew my blood and I was done.

The drink wasn't too bad, tasted like red kool-aid with 4 cups of sugar in it.

BTW my appointment was at 8:45 am and all i had to eat before was trail mix.

  • My test instructions were to fast for 12 hours before the 1 hr test, but it also mentioned that there is no data that suggests eating within that time period will change the results, but that there is still a possibility (or something to that effect).

It mentioned that if you had to eat the morning of the test, to eat protein and not something sugary / starchy.

I fasted for 12 hours and had my blood drawn this morning (though I am second guessing the huge plate of lasagna I ate the night before - hopefully that doesn't screw me up haha). Still waiting on my results.
