AFO (Ankle foot orthotics): Your experiences?

It looks like these are in DS' future, since his private PT and EI PT think he may benefit from them.

If your child used these, would you mind telling me the manufacturer, if you thought they helped, how you used them (all the time/short periods), and if they caused pressure spots?

Right now he is using a stander for 20 minutes twice a day, 2-3 times a week, working on learning to bear weight through his lower half, just to give you an idea of where we are at.

  • My son has Down Syndrome and he was just fit for sure step AFO's at 18 months. Don't have any advice to give you but Sure Step's' are supposed to be great for low tone!

  • my little man is also using them for low tone.  He used Hanger Orthodics for the fitting but they are made by cascade.  He walks beautifully with them on, it took 11 months after he got them for him to start walking, he is getting fitted for a new pair in the next month or so.

AFO's are wonderful, Jake didn't like them at first but he adjusted really well and now they don't bother him at all.  My pt said some people wear them their entire lives, she is hoping that Jake will only need one more pair (about another year in them) and he will be good to go.

  • My son has been wearing DAFO'S since he was about a year and a half.  I don't think they are for low tone???  He walks on his toes and has rounded heals.  We tried regular shoes and he would walk right out of them.  We live in Michigan and use a company called Wright and Filippis to make his splints.  We have to travel 3 hours to see the man that makes them but I am OK with that because the guy here at the local company didn't do as good of a job.  If the splints aren't made right they can cause pressure spots.  Keep an eye on his feet and if you suspect he is getting some call and have them remade.  I make sure to check that the back of the splint where his heal goes isn't accumulating dust.  If they are it means they aren't doing the job.  Good Luck to you>>>
