Cloth Diapering

Conquered our stink!! and a question

We finally conquered our stink issue. Our diapers smelled horrible whenever DS peed in them.

I added more detergent (we use Tide) and 1/2 cup of baking soda to the hot wash. When the rinse cycle started I added a cup of vinegar and then did another cold wash with no detergent. No stink at all when DS peed in them today!! YAY!

So my question, do I do this with every wash now or only when I start to notice the stink again? I would imagine that you can't use too much baking soda or vinegar on your CDs right?

  • I know vinegar will break down the elastic, so you don't want to use it all the time.

  • I only part time CDed my DS but I would always use biokleen bac out (and I used it on pet stains as well) and it freaking rocks! It smells like sprite or 7up and really helps with stinkiness.

  • I would continue to use more detergent in your wash but not worry about the baking soda and vinegar.  Usually for stink that is not ammonia the culprit is not enough detergent.  If you are having ammonia issues then I would use vinegar in your rinse as well.  I have been adding 1/4 cup vinegar into my initial cold water rinse every time I wash for over a year now and haven't had any problems with it affecting my dipes.
