Voluntarily putting LO in daycare...

I am a teacher and I start back to work the first Monday in January (the 3rd). The daycare that we've chosen for DD is closed from Christmas to New Years Day. I've decided to start her in daycare early so that we both can get used to it. I don't want to have to worry about her and not have the opportunity to just "drop in" when I want to.

She'll be going for half a day three days a week for the next two weeks. I know it'll be best for both of our sanity when I start back to work knowing that she's somewhere I'm comfortable with.

Did anyone else start daycare early just so they could get used to it, or am I the only crazy one who is giving up maternity leave time with my LO by putting her in daycare?

  • My LO won't be in daycare..but I get why you are doing it. I would want the chance to check-in unannounced...can your H pop in for you?

  • No, DH works over an hour away and is also a teacher so we have the same hours (with the exception of his drive). Sad

  • I would do the same thing to make the transition easier and for my own peace of mind!  Good thinking!

  • I know several people that did that.  I didn't for financial reasons and because we started back the week after thanksgiving and knew that the short week before hand would be crazy and irregular for the school.

I have done four different pop-ins though.  The first when I went to get information, the 2nd when DH and I took a tour, the 3rd after DS was born and we needed to fill out paper work and the 4th the week before DS started to return paper work and to bring in suppliess (diapers, wipes, etc). So I am really comfortable with them.  There hasn't been once that I got a henky feeling about anything, and actually was more pleased each time.

  • Makes sense to me... That way LO gets used to it gradually.

  • Before I became a SAHM, I had DS in DC and I did the same thing. I put him in a few hours a day. However, I did it at the same time everyday so he could better get a routine since he was going to be in there five days a week. The DC also suggested a couple hours everyday instead of just three days. It took about two weeks but things went really well.

  • I am doing that. We are also starting for real on Jan 3 but I am bringing him in for a few half days early.  Every mom I work with recomends this!
