When to take her to the Dr for a cold?

DD has had a cold for the past week.  At first, it was really bad...lots of green snot pouring from her nose.  Her cough was really dry & if we weren't out of town, I would've taken her right then b/c I was afraid it might be croup.  Then, the snot slowed down & her cough became more wet.  Now, she still has a runny nose, although its more clear & not all the time.  She still has an occasional cough, but again, its just random.  The thing that concerns me is that sometimes I can feel the "junk" in her little body if I put my hand on her chest/back when she's breathing.  Again, that isn't all the time & usually after she coughs I can't feel it anymore so I think it's not actually in her chest, but I'm a little concerned about it.  Otherwise, her behavior, eating/sleeping habits are normal.  She's never had a fever.  So do I keep waiting this out since she's been getting better, or would you take her in?  Thanks!

  • My doctor sort of goes by the fever rule - no fever then don't bring them in. That being said, coloured mucous can be sign of infection so I would watch out for that. I think you should be good though...mine's had a nasty cold for the past week, throwing up mucous and all, but no fever so doc said she was "fine".

  • My dr said for a cold if its still going strong after a week and a half to call. Otherwise, no fever no reason to call
  • my rule is to take her in only if she's not eating well or if I see her really unconfortable.

    GL!

    hope she gets better soon

  • We went through this with DS recently and I waited 2 weeks which is what they told me. I was ruling out teething and after 2 weeks I couldn't handle it anymore anyways. We ran a cool mist humidifier in his room and that helped so much! He didn't mess with his ear, but when I took him they said he was on the verge of a full out ear infection! I'm so glad I took him when I did or it would have been a rough night!
