TTC after 35

Nervous about HSG

Going for HSG test tomorrow.  Will be able to find our results of the hormone tests I had drawn last Tuesday too.  DH had his analysis and everything came back pretty normal.  Was several days late for me last month, and thought we might just get lucky and not have to get too far into the thick of this infertility stuff.  Girls at work think I'm crazy for TTC this side of 40, especially since my son just turned 18.  I just got married and this isn't all about me anymore.  Need some support that I'm not crazy, people do go through this and get pregnant??  We've decided that we're probably going to do one IUI cycle, then 3 IVFs....if no BFP, then I think we're done trying.  Actually, this is further than I thought we'd head on this journey.....but we really want the experience of raising OUR child, together.

Re: Nervous about HSG

  • The HSG was uncomfortable but not unbearable. I took 4 Aleve about an hour beforehand. It was pretty cool to see the fallopian tubes and uterus all lit up.

    Best of luck!

  • I don't have anything to say about the HSG because I don't have my first RE appt until the end of January, but I wanted to let you know that I don't think you're crazy for trying.  I'm 36 and DH is 37.  We both have daughters who just turned 16 and 19, obviously from when we were young.  We've been married for just over a year and really want a child together.  I never thought I would only have one child, so I always knew that I would have another (didn't know it would be so hard though). It just took a lot longer than I thought to find the right man.  I have lots of people think I'm crazy, but they are not in my situation so couldn't possibly understand.  I worry more about how DD feels about me having a baby when she's about to graduate high school.  But she's an amazing kid and we have a great relationship so she's just pulling for it to happen.

Sorry, long story just to tell you I don't think you're crazy.  Good luck at your appt today.

  • It's definitely not crazy, most of my friends are in their late 30s/early 40s and trying to conceive!

Good luck with the HSG. Honestly, mine was awful but for most people it seems to be mostly just some discomfort. Definitely take some pain meds an hour before (I wish I had doubled my dose!).

  • Like PP, I haven't had one (yet) but wanted to wish you luck. You are not crazy for wanting to experience raising a child with your new husband.  I got married for the first time 6 months ago. Neither of us has any kids. I am 37, he is 42.  I would have rathered starting earlier in life but we found each other later!  Yes, people do this and get pregnant! Hang in there:-)

  • Good luck - for me, it wasn't all that bad. A little uncomfortable, but not as bad as I anticipated.

My last cycle really tricked me. I am normally on a 27-29 day cycle, so when 29th day came, I had hope. 30th day came, no AF...even more hope (even though I knew something was up bc I tested a BFN)..then on 31, it was all over. Prob the stress and everything...but anyways - good luck! I took 800mg of advil the night before and the morning of the procedure.

  • I have mine tommorrow too. I am excited though. Everything else has been normal so far so I just want to know if this is it then what next. My RE is great and I have a vicoden script so I will be fine. My friend said it does not hurt at all. good luck.
  • Good luck to both HSG gals!  I took double the advil dose and was fine.  In fact it was very cool.  I asked for a copy of my films so I could marvel at it any time I want.  Plus I've heard the months after HSG are good for PG since it clears stuff out.  (although that hasn't been my personal experience since mine was July).  good luck!

About me: A pixie in the city, 41, TTC #1 since May 2010, married 18 years. Diagnosed with, surgically removed, endometrioma Aug.2010 Sept 2010 IUI #1=BFN, Oct=cyst/bfn, Nov 2010 IUI #2 = bfn. Had to postpone IUI #3 b/c of a cyst natural=BFN. Skipped IUI #3, decided to go for IVF. Found/removed uterine polyps Jan 2011. IVF cancelled, no follicles. IVF #2: 3 great embies put in on Easter Sunday = BFN. Hoping for another chance at IVF in July. TTC is NOT for wimps. http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ticker/2fab90/ttc.png
  • The HSG isn't anything to worry about.  At least for me it was just minimal brief cramping.  As for being crazy trying to conceive -  I am 42 and my DH is going to be 45 in a few weeks and he has a 13 year-old.  If it's crazy to want a child, then let the naysayers say what they want - we are the only ones who control what we do.

     Best of luck to you.
