Sippy cups w/ straws... VERY slow flow??

We've just started giving DD a sippy cup w/ a straw and DH and I have tested the straw ourselves... it seems to require A LOT of suction.  We're using the "Munchkin" brand.  Is this normal? DD seems to be able to do it, but isn't interested in doing it for very long.  We tried replacing it w/ a normal straw, and she got the liquid all over her... any advice?

  • We tried the Munchkin ones too. DD didn't like them, but did like chewing them. I tested the straw too and found it was very slow. ( It's the valve in the middle of the straw piece) We tried a couple other straw cups, but they seemed the same to me. We either use the nuby soft spout cup or the Take and Toss cups w/normal straw.  It took DD awhile to get the hang of a normal straw, but she did really quickly.

  • First we tried the Nuby straw cups since everyone raved about them and DD seemed to have a hard time getting liquid out.  We now use the Playtex straw cups and she does great with them and seems much less frustrated.

  • The First Years makes a great cup that has a snap on lid and a straw that you push through a hole in the top.  Kind of like the kind you get at a fast food restaurant, but it's made of plastic.  They're not totally leak proof, but the straw is MUCH easier to suck on and get liquid out!  DD does great with them.
