  • I disagree.  I actually dislike that people think I'm disabled just because I'm pregnant.

  • I think so too! Our Publix has 2 spots in the parking lot that are right up front that say "for expectant mothers or parent(s) with newborn only" and last night DH drove me to the store and parked in one of these. As he was getting out, this lady across the parking lot started yelling to her daughter about how inconsiderate and rude people were for parking in those spots when they didn't need to and she started walking towards him. I got out of the car and she shut up and turned around mid-step. It was awesome on two levels. One, that she wanted to defend pregnant women's rights to park there, and two, that she stopped being so mean as soon as she saw she was wrong.
  • I disagree. Pregnancy is not a handicap.

  • I would have disagreed with this until this week.  Now, I wish I could just float around instead of walking.  I am so tired and just shop online so I don't have to go fight parking lots (especially during christmas time)!

  • I also disagree. I like some special treatment, like priority seats on the subway train. But I also get really irritated by all my co-workers trying to constantly take things from me (like empty boxes?) and telling me I "shouldn't be doing that." It gets old fast.
  • Maybe a handicapp sticker isnt the right choice exactly, but I understand what you are saying.
  • Dunno about a sticker... but a few preggo-parking spots would be nice.

Places that should have them: Movie theaters, malls (in multiple spaces around the mall), banks, grocery stores, any building with a parking lot meant to accomodate more than 50 cars and at least one preggo spot at sit-down restaurants.

LOL! I think expectant mothers' parking is nice, but I wouldn't want a handicapped sticker. As awkward as it looks, I know that walking is good for me, and I can do it. There are people who are much more deserving.

Publix is great, isn't it? They always ask if they can carry my groceries out to the car, which is rare these days. Are you in the Publix Baby Club? We just used all of our "stock-up" coupons a couple of weeks ago and got a lot of good free and half-price stuff. It's a great program.

They ARE great! But they're great even when I'm not pregnant. And for the record, I still park far away and walk just to get exercise most of the time. However, it was raining cats and dogs and there were no spots even remotely close, so I took advantage of the opportunity :) I would hate to take one of those spots and then see some Mom with twin newborns or another pregnant woman who was obviously having problems not able to park close by.

I did sign up for the baby club, but I haven't gotten anything yet except a big a#% book about newborns and small children and some formula coupons (which I don't plan on using at this point). I love coupons, though!

QFT.  If I can manage to walk around the mall, or the grocery store, I can manage to walk an extra hundred yards to the door.

  • I don't think we should necessarily get a handicap sticker, but more places having the expectant mothers parking spots would be nice.  I've gotten to the point where walking is really uncomfortable, especially with multiple grocery bags or having to push a cart all the way to the car, and then all the way to the cart wrangler.

  • I'm pregnant, not handicapped.  I despise the idea of entitlement just b/c I'm pregnant.

And ditto pp - if you can walk the store, you can walk a few extra spots.

I can see using them when I have a newborn, but there's no reason why I need them now, even at nearly 37 weeks.

Besides, a little exercise likely won't hurt and we probably all need it.

  • I didn't know people still use the word 'handicap'! And no, I don't need a sticker. Ask me again in a few weeks but I certainly didn't need one at 30 weeks.
  • Dislike. I'm pregnant, not disabled.

  • I disagree.  DH's mom is in a wheelchair, and it sucks when all the spots are taken because she needs the room to get in and out of her chair.  Even with pulling Neriah out of the car, I don't need that much room, and I can certainly walk a couple extra steps, even while carrying a toddler.

  • I don't think I'd want a handicap sticker, walking is good for us. I was actually surprised at how many places down here actually have EM parking spots, more than just BRU... way more. I almost never use them though because 1) I don't mind the walking, and 2) I always feel like there's someone out there that's *more pregnant* than I am that might need it more than I do. I'm only 32 weeks and haven't had any problems with my back or legs or swelling or waddling. I take my dog for walks all day long and usually drag DH out for a walk or 2 with me once he gets home from work too. I enjoy it still.

Subject title says it all. :)

Disagree.  I park further out purposely so I can get more exercise.

  • There is a very large mall nearby that has those pregnant parking spots - they are always full, always - since there is no way to enforce them, people just park in them anyways so they are never actually available for the preggos and moms with new infants.

I actually got a temp handicap pass a few weeks ago b/c I have a long term ankle injury (I ripped my foot off my leg and had it re-attached through two surgeries) that the pregnancy is creating some complications with.  I only use it on days that my ankle is so swollen I can't walk without a cane.  The other days I park in regular spots - though they are never a few extra spots or few hundred feet away ... with holiday shopping around here, it's the difference of half a parking lot or more.

But one thing I have noticed lately is that in many of the parking lots I am in, I'd actually be doing the other customers a favor by using the handicap spot, because - like at the grocery store - there are about 6 unused handicap spots at any given time just sitting there empty while the rest of the lot is full.

  • I also disagree.  I can still move about fairly well, and I'm lugging a 30 lb toddler with me.

I do wish more stores had customer with small children parking near the cart corrals (just wait,  you'll drive by door spots for cart corral spots once you have the baby), and would leave some carts in the corrals for folks with small children.

  • I agree and disagree. (I know, says a lot huh.)

Well, I agree that some women should get one. I for instance, due to my personal birth defect causing problems with my uterus and have to be on "modified" bed rest and having the cramps and such then yes for some folks they are great. However, I know several women who have had great pregnancies. And they love to get out and walk to stores and such. I think it should be on a case by case basis.

  • *Lurking from Feb 2011*  I agree to a certain extent... I live in Alaska and we had a really bad ice storm the week of Thanksgiving.  It was imposible to walk anywhere without slipping.  When I am out with DH it is not a bad thing.  He drops me off at the door or I just hold his arm and use him as a crutch... When I have to be out by myself though, it would be nice to park closer to the door so I dont have to worry about falling on the ice.
