Talk to me about croup...

I just want you all to share your experiences. Taking dd to the dr on monday because she is sounding like a seal lol...

Re: Talk to me about croup...

  • What else is going on with her?  I don't know how it feels to infants but I had it as an adult about 5 years ago.  I laughed because I thought only infants could get it.  It sucked!  Does she have a dry cough or a wet cough?

  • She sounds like a seal yelping, definitely wet. We were at SIL's brought it to my attention. DD has had this cough intermittantly for about two weeks but I was trying to let it run its course even tho it sounded a little off. I have googled croup and it seems like it may be what she has. might explain her crappy napping the last week as well.
  • My son had it last year.  It was awful but it lasted only 4 days which is the normal amount of time for Croup.  I'd be surprised if it lasted 2 weeks.  The first night with the Croup is AWFUL.  The baby/child is gasping for air and that is when the seal cough is the worst.  After that night, it did get better and by day 4, it was gone.  We did get a steroid to open my son's throat more - I know it made it easier to breathe but I don't know if it got rid of the Croup faster.

I hope it's not the Croup- good luck!

  • Brock is recovering from bronchiolitis. The doc said it's a form of RSV :( He coughed really badly for about 4 weeks. He's finally sounding better. No fun. It's extremely contagious, too. So... we've stayed home. No church or playdates in a month!

  • Ashlyn had it a few weeks ago... It was really not a big deal.  After she started sounding like a seal I took her to the doc.  He prescribed some cough meds & it was gone pretty quickly.  Even though it sounded like a wet cough, her lungs were totally clear.  The doctor said it's one of the top 10 things he sees in kids.
  • Pediatric Nurse here!

First off, Croup is contagious! Beware because I saw you have another LO. When her breathing sounds noisy you could hold her in the bathroom while it fills with steam from the shower. You could also take her outside at night and the cold air clears it up. Give tylenol every four hours for pain or irritability. If you think her breathing is compromised or you notice her color changing (blue?) or decrese in bottles and wet diapers take her to the PMD.
