I got all excited because there was a response to your post.... but it's just another one of us looking to learn to sew. I'm right there with ya. I know I'm getting a sewing machine for Christmas too!
my first project was a set of cloth wipes. really easy b/c it's just straight lines. if you feel you need some hands on info, try a sewing class. you will probably have better luck at a higher end fabric store in your area than joanns, if you have one. read the owners manuel for your machine, too! that will cover all the how to basics of operating the machine.
I would read the directions on the sewing machine, look on blogs and other things online, and maybe post an ad on Craigslist for someone to help you. It's pretty easy to do the beginner stuff. Just remember, someone made a seam ripper for a reason and that seam ripper is your best friend!
I grew up with a mom that sewed a lot, so much of what I learned was through osmosis. However, to really get started sewing my own stuff, I kind of just jumped right in. Sometimes things don't come out that great, but I learn from every project I do. I find it helpful to follow tutorials for things I want to make.
Agree w/pp, just try it. I am a sewing newbie but I am willing to try. I watch you tube videos and read blogs. I have asked some of the ladies at work. I am not a manual reader, so I only use it after much research. gl
I'm hoping to get a sewing machine for Christmas. I don't know which one to ask for though. Something reasonably priced. (Under $200 preferably.) I'd like to do things like curtains, diapers, quilt, etc. I used to sew with my Mom when I was a kid and I helped my Aunt sew quilts. It's been about 12 years since I've touched a sewing machine though.
I have a Brother 6000CSi- it works well. The only issue that I am having is using elastic thread- haven't figured that out yet. Overall very pleased and highly recommend.
My mother is a fantastic seamstress (made prom dresses, etc.), and I can barely thread my hand-me-down sewing machine. I decided this year to make cloth gift bags for our Christmas gifts to cut down on trash. I had to rip apart the first one and start over, but the second one took me about 20 minutes start to finish. I used the tutorial here: https://happythings.typepad.com/happythings/2006/04/dsb_301_better_.html
They turned out so cute! I love that they're reusable, and they match my Christmas decorations!
Re: Learning to sew: Where to start?
Ooh me too! I need all the help/direction I can get.
*sits patiently with notebook and pen in hand ready to take notes*
