Thoughts on Harper Jane?

Will people think Harper is a boy's name?  Our last name starts with H too.

Re: Thoughts on Harper Jane?

  • I think of Harper as a girl's name honestly.

  • Harper= girl name, and very trendy.

I also think of when someone 'harps' on you to do something.

  • I love it.  Harper is most definitely a girl's name these days.  It ranks way higher for girls on the social security baby names list and it's getting very trendy for girls too (which could be a bad thing!).
  • Harper is definitely a girls name, but it isn't my style. When I hear Harper I instantly think "Harpy"... Tongue Tied Probably just me though, since its a very trendy name right now.

I do LOVE Jane, for first or middle name.

  • Very pretty!

  • I think of Harper as a girl's name. While I would never use it, I do like it. Harper Jane is very nice. And I don't think your last name starting with H would be a problem.

  • I love the name Harper and it is definitely on my list of girl names. Harper paired with Jane = super adorable.

  • I don't like it.  Plain Jane... that is all I can think and Harper.  Too trendy... and I also only think of a mean nickname Harpy.

  • Love Jane!

Really dislike Harper and don't see the appeal of the name even if you do love TKAM.

Reminds me of "harping" on someone or harpoon. I prefer Harlow just because it has a similar feel but sounds much prettier imo.

  • Harper is definitely a girl's name. I said a few weeks ago I met someone and I knew she had two kids, Lily and Harper. When I asked her how old her girls were she said, "Well I have a girl and a boy. Lily is 5 and Harper is 2." It was awkward.

    Harper Jane is beautiful.

  • Love it, but I'm biased ;-)

And since I have a Harper, I hear a lot of "oh my ____'s daughter is Harper too!" and I've run into a ton (all girls) since DD1 was born. It's definitely getting more trendy!

And about the Harpy thing. I'm Christie and I got called Crusty a bunch growing up. I'm hardly scarred. You can pretty much come up with an unappealing nickname or association for most names if you try hard enough :)

  • Incredibly trendy girl's name.  One of the "let's use a masculine sounding last name as a female name" trend (like Emerson or Addison).  Plus, lots of people use it to sound literary since Harper Lee is the well known author of To Kill A Mockingbird.  Of course, her name was actually NELLE Harper Lee.

Harper actually makes me think of Mama's Family (the comedy with Carol Burnett)...so I can't imagine why anyone would want to use it as a first name.  Of course, Addison makes me think of Addison's disease (which can be horridly painful) and Avery makes me think of dirty grubby boys who kill spiders.

  • I really like it.

For whatever reason, To Kill a Mockingbird names are coming in vogue. Atticus is on the rise for boys; Harper for girls. I don't think people will assume your daughter is a boy.
