pureeing/freezing apples

Has anyone pureed/frozen their own apples (and pears) for your LO? I was going to make some today, but a friend told me they turn brown and don't puree or freeze well (and just to buy apple sauce).

I've been making all of DS's food so I'd rather keep doing that.....anyone make apples and have them turn out ok?

(I've already checked wholesomebabyfood...they said it could brown, but didn't say anything about it not freezing/defrosting well).

Re: pureeing/freezing apples

  • I have not had any of my batches turn brown. I freeze them right away.

  • None of my apples or pears have turned brown.  Some on my bananas and avocados have but read its to be expected and OK.

This.  Also, I did just buy applesauce from the store.  I just looked for unsweetened organic applesauce.  Because it was unsweetened it was a bit tart for Luke, but he still really liked it.

  • None of my apples have turned brown, but the pears have even though I freeze them right away. They both puree really smooth and freeze just fine.

  • No browning here. I just made pears for the first time too but I added a dash of cinnamon, he loves them!

  • I freeze them right after pureeing them and haven't had any of them turn brown. I make a big batch of both too and never had any problems.

  • The only time I had some turn brown was when I was doing a HUGE batch. So some of the pealed apples and pears started to turn while I pealed the rest.  To stop that, I put the pealed ones in a pot of water while I continued to peal. Worked like a charm.

    Apple/Pear sauce is DD's favorite.

Thanks - I'm making a pretty large batch so I'll try this! Maybe my friend let them sit out unpeeled for too long or something...or didn't freeze it right away.

  • I made a large batch this fall and canned them in small glass jars. They taste great and keep my freezer free for other things.
