C Sections and breastfeeding within an hour of birth

I've always read that it's best for babies to be breastfed within an hour of their birth to get a good start (that is, if you plan on BFing).  With DS, it was my plan to request this, but then I ended up in an emergency c section and didn't even get to meet him until almost 2 hours later.  This time, I have a planned c section and I'd like to ask if this is possible.  Did anyone here have a c section and still get to breastfeed quickly after the birth?

  • I had both an emergency and a planned one and with both didn't get to BF until I was in the recovery room 2-3 hours after birth.

  • I BF'ed in recovery about 40 minutes after she was born. If everything goes as planned, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get her as soon as they are done with you.

  • I didn't get the chance to because I lost a lot of blood during surgery, so it took them quite a bit more time to close me up, but it was the policy at my hospital to breastfeed within the first hour, even for c-sections, so I know its possible!

  • As long as there are no complications, you shoudl be able to BF pretty quickly.  My DD was born at 5:14, and I was in recovery by 5:50.  The nurse was practically pulling my boob out to stick the baby on as soon as we got in the recovery room.  So, about 35 minutes later.

  • They brought Aoife in to the recovery room not too long after I was in there (probably within an hour), but it was hard to BF when I was still pretty numb.  It maybe lasted a few minutes, but she nurses just fine.  With DS, I got to BF right away, but it wasn't a section.  They are both great eaters!

  • I BF about 2 hours after he was born. I was in recovery for about 90 minutes before I went back to the room and during that time DH was skin-on-skin with him.  BF has gone quite well.  At my hospital they have a policy of not having the newborn in with the mum in recovery after surgery.  DS doesn't seem worse for the wear although I agree that it's definitely ideal to start right away.

  • I didn't get to; my blood pressure dropped and wouldn't come back up without epinephrine and she had low blood sugar, so the nurses stuck a bottle in her mouth (Angry).

  • My MW pushed to get me out of recovery to BF.  I asked her ahead of time because with DS, it was a good 2-3 hrs and it really bothered me.  This time, I was able to BF DDskin to skin within about 1h15 which was great- my MW had actually called down after 30 minutes and was going to bring DD down to me in recovery, but the recovery team didn't allow it :(

  • I had an emergency c-section with lots of complications that started with my water prematurely rupturing.  I didn't get to BF for 13 hours.  They did not feed him though, so he nearly took my boob off when we finally got around to it.

exactly this except it was closer to a 1/2 hr. I just had to wait until I was comfortable enough that I could hold her securely (reaction to pain meds)

  • I didn't have any complications during or after surgery and was breastfeeding within 30-45 minutes later.

  • I was breastfeeding within 40-45 minutes of having her, and because I was still kind of numb and confused, the nurses helped hold her and positioned her. It was right in the recovery room, and it was so nice that we got to do that right away (well, right away after they finished closing me up).

  • I had a planned C/s for medical reasons, I told my OR nurse when we were doing the pre-op paperwork that I wanted to BF as soon as possible. She had DD latched on before we left the OR and I nursed while being wheeled to the recovery room.
  • I had a planned and an unplanned c/s. Both times my boys were nursing within an hour of being born. I held each boy as inwas wheeled to recovery. As Sion as my nurse got me settled in recovery, I nursed. Just be sure to tell your nurse that it's important to you to bf as soon as possible.
  • My c/s was urgent (unplanned but had time for spinal), uncomplicated, and I breastfed as soon as we got to recovery, well within an hour of birth.
