Are We Overreacting?

DH's stepsister has had issues and made poor decisions her entire life.  She has three children and they are currently placed with family because she was caught running a meth lab in her home.  They are happy to be away from her and have disclosed a lot of past abuse and neglect as well.  Not to mention the youngest was born very premature and will have lifelong issues due to her smoking and drug use.  She was in jail for two months until her dad (DH's stepdad) bailed her out right after Thanksgiving.  So she's now staying with DH's mom and stepdad.

DH and I are refusing to go to their home while she is there, or even after she's not living there anymore because there is still a chance of her stopping by and we don't want Carter around her at all.  MIL understands but DH's stepdad is upset with us.

Regardless, we are going to stand by our decision, but I just wanted to get some outside opinions from you ladies as to whether or not you think we're overreacting by not wanting to be around her or have Carter around her.

Re: Are We Overreacting?

  • I wouldn't say you are overreacting.

  • sounds like a good plan to be..nothing wrong with it!
  • I totally understand your POV and you're not overreacting.

FWIW, I have a similar situation in my family.  It's been tough on certain family members to stand their ground because they're taking a lot flack from others (especially now, around the holidays), but I totally respect them for not caving.

  • Not overreacting in my opinion.  I'd do the same thing.

  • I would feel the same way...sorry stepFIL is giving you a hard time  :(
