Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Very, very GASSY baby!!

My baby is very, very gassy. Usually farts (haha) like DH (haha) about every 5 minutes. Sometimes it bothers her, sometimes not. I have tried cutting things out of diet, not working.

Tried Mylicon and other products, not working. Tried tepid bath, not working. Tried moving legs in bicycle motion, works, but doesn't fix. Tried tummy massage, works but doesn't fix. Tried warm cloth on belly, not working. Tummy time sometimes helps.

So, do any of you have a very gassy baby that they are bothered by it and what do you do for them? Just like tonight she usually goes down so easy, but had very bad gas and she was screaming till it all came out. Took me 2 hours to put her to bed, anything other suggestions?

  • I lay her on her belly across my knees for extra pressure and try burping her that way, I put her up over my shoulder, not sitting up but sort of hanging over my back so my shoulder is putting pressure on her belly. And sometimes, I lay her flat to change her, then pick her back up and catch her off guard and get the burp to come out.  If I dont go quickly she screams - doesnt care for being burped, so I have to beat her to the punch.

  • I was just about to ask this=( I am desperate, LO will go down for 5-10 minutes then wake up screaming....tried everything you did and nothing, and I don't want him to become dependent on gas drops.

  • Same here, but my LO would also scream ALL THE TIME due to pain and he spit up ALOT.  We switched bottles to Dr. Brown - that helped some.  We went to the dr yesterday and they put him on Nutramigen for milk protein sensitivity.  SO VERY MUCH BETTER TODAY.  Problem is that this formula is almost twice as much as others.  She said that some babies just have immature digestive systems and it takes a little while to work out.  She said that this even happens with BF babies.

  • I lay Violet down on her back, on he floor on a blanket. I then move her legs as if she is riding pedaling on a bicycle. I also lift her butt from the floor while doing this sometimes, too. The farts come ripping out of her and it usually relieves her pretty quickly! (And believe me I have heard it all - from how excessive crying adds to gas, soda - from BFing moms of course - to "you're using the wrong bottle.") The truth is that gas in our intestines and can come from the air we swallow and it is produced by bacteria living in our guts. But any know-it-all will tell you otherwise, since they know you and your baby best! (Note the sarcasm! Sorry...I have been getting hit from every angle today, it seems!) I do hope the bicycle kicks help though! Good luck.

  • Ditto the PP. We all have gas due to the bacteria in our intestines breaking down the food we eat. Having a baby who farts regularly isn't inherently bad and is a sign of the digestive system working and things moving along. The only time it's bad is when it causes your LO pain.

Mylicon and simethicone gas drops only work on gas in the stomach, so air that's ingested while eating. Often this happens when the baby is eating too quickly. So two approaches to preventing this is go with a slower flow nipple and/or take multiple breaks during the bottle to burp. If you do use mylicon, it's OK to give up to 12 times a day, so really with every feeding. Just be sure to burp your LO very well because the mylicon will force the little air bubbles into a bigger air bubble (which is where the burp comes from) and if it's not released it will travel to the intestines and cause gas pains.

Once the gas is in the intestines, there's nothing you can do other than work the legs, get the butt up in the air or lay the baby on his/her left side and wait for it to pass.
