Babies: 0 - 3 Months

bath time..

My LO is over 6 weeks old now and he STILL hates bath time!  Usually babies LOVE their bath time, and I dread it when it is time!  Is there anything I can do to make it more enjoyable for my him?  I know that the water is luke warm and I place a few toys in the water for him to look at.  He sits in the water for maybe 4 mins looking around and then starts crying and getting upset!  I will put a warm wash cloth over his stomach to keep him warm as well as a helpful hint from my sister.

My sister's LO LOVES his bath time from the time hewas a newborn.  My sister told me that was one way to calm her LO down in the evenings!  What am I doing wrong?!?!

  • Not sure?! Do you have one of those baby bath thermometers? The one I have says to have the water between 91 - 97 degrees F, anything below is too cold and anything above may be too hot. Not sure if that is the reason, but I thought I would throw it out there. My DD loves bath time and it relaxs her, and when the water isn't as warm she will cry, so I will add a bit more hot water and she is fine.

  • My DD was the same way until I decided to make the bath water a little warmer. SHE LOVED IT! Not hot, but really warm. My tub has a thermometer on the basin and sometimes it takes it a while to change...But warmer is better. My best bet is that your LO is looking around for a minute and awing at the new situation and then all hell breaks loose when realizing that it's way too cold! :) a heater in the room also makes it better. GL!
  • SORRY FOR THE ALL CAPS. TRY USING A RECIEVING BLANKET AND SWADDLING THEY WILL STAY WARM AND FEEL SECURE.

This. I'd go just a little warmer on the water and make sure the room is nice and toasty before undressing your baby and putting them in the tub. The one time Brayden has ever fussed for a bath was when he was cold. He loves his bath!  Good luck!

That's funny! Ollie loves his bath time, I use a cup to pour some of the water on his tummy and it seems to amuse him. The hardest part of bathing him is getting him out, he gets really cold and hates leaving the warm water. :

When I get LO out, I sit on the edge off the tub with the towel on my knees, lay her on top of it, wrap her up right away, and hug her so my body heat keeps her warm while she dries off. It's easiest in shorts and a bra so my clothes don't get soaked, but it works great for keeping her warm.

  • If the water is only luke warm then it might actually be too cold. The first few times we gave LO a bath in his baby tub we experimented with the temperature of the water. Our LO coincidentally prefers the water to be the same temp as the showers I take so it's easy for me to run a bath, I just turn the knob to the spot where it goes for my showers. One thing I ALWAYS do before putting LO in is test the water with my elbow and let him test it with his feet before I submerge him. This helps him acclimate to it and will tell me if it needs to be adjusted at all. We then lay him on the bath positioner and bath sponge (we have the Froggy bath center thing)

We also jack up the heat to 75-78 before bath so it's toasty in the bathroom and nursery, do the washcloth trick and use aromatherapy bath products with lavender (California Baby), which is calming. LO yawns as soon as he relaxes in the water. As he lays there we take cupfulls of water and gently pour it over him so he stays warm. And we take him out of the tub while he's still happy vs waiting for him to start fussing.
