If you are religious and pray (not a T&P request)

Do you pray with LO at night before bed?  Or any other time throughout the day?

When I'm rocking DS to sleep at night I say a little prayer...

"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.  And if I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen."

Re: If you are religious and pray (not a T&P request)

  • We started praying with our older one this year. We pray before meals and he will ask to pray and is really proud of himself. He will tell us he closed his eyes when we are done. Very cute.

  • We say the Guardian Angel prayer.
  • We have a traditional German prayer my family all says, then we do the Lord's Prayer, then I say a special prayer for him. We also say grace and we talk about what prayer means.
  • We pray a song/prayer at bedtime, and we pray before we eat.

The song is one my H made up, because his mom had made one up when he was little to help him remember how to pray and give thanks for the day.  Its pretty cute if I do say so myself

  • I usually whisper something different each night. As she gets older I plan to having her give me input on what she wants to pray for, and then eventually having her say her own prayers. I just like the "free flow" rather than the memorized ones, especially the one you mentioned because I don't like how it talks about dying before you wake up :( .

We do a "memorized" one for mealtime though. We say "Thank you God for this day, and for everything that you've given us. Amen"

  • Yep...every single night.

We say, "Matthew, Mark, Luke & John bless the bed that I lie on, four corners to my bed, for angels around my head. 1 to watch, 1 to pray, & 2 to guide me through the day...Amen"

& DH and I each add our own prayers at the end.

  • We say "Now I Lay Me" before bed and sing a prayer that his teacher made up at meal times. It's really cute.

Thank You Lord, For This Food

I'm About to Eat, To Help me Grow,

Big and Strong, From my Head down to my Feet. Amen.

We have children's Bibles that we read from at times and plan to teach him to pray on his own.

  • I say the Guardian Angel prayer and when I'm done she says "Amen"--it is so darn cute.

  • We do this one, since he's too little yet to say his own:

    Father, unto thee I pray.

Thou hast guarded me all day.

    Safe I am while in thy sight;

    Safely let me sleep tonight.

Bless my friends, the whole world bless.

    Help me to learn helpfulness.

Keep me ever in thy sight.

So to all, I say, goodnight.

  • We pray before every meal and say prayers at night.  We've done this since before DD was born.  We think it's an important thing to be brought up with from the start and hope that our children continue in our footsteps.

  • We pray before meals and at bedtime.  I usually put DS to bed, so I say a prayer (changes from day to day, but covers the basics:  thankful for blessings, prayers for family/friends, asking forgiveness for sins, etc.) and then I say the Lord's Prayer.

  • Yes, we pray before meals, over the meal and about what is going on at the time. We also pray before bed which DH puts "A" to bed and has his own little ritual with her, and I put "T" to bed and my prayer for her at night is "Lord Jesus, thankyou for this day. Please help my babygirl to sleep good, and let her have sweet princess dreams, and sweet dreams about her baby sister and the new baby. In Jesus name Amen." That is every other night, and then she prayers every other night her own prayer.

  • We do before we eat. We have a few prayers that we sing, and we rotate through them. DS LOVES it, though he has no idea that's praying, but he'll get it when he's older. We do it this way just because we think it's fun now that he's here :D

I was actually thinking of finding some different children's prayers on the internet and compiling a prayer book. I don't "say prayers" with DS before bed, but I do pray for him while I'm waiting for him to fall asleep.

  • We do... almost every night... we say a general prayer, the Lord's prayer and then now I Lay be down to sleep.

I say it the way the op does "Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep, for if I die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to take."

My sister changed hers to this.. because her 3 yo got sad with the word die.. one of her uncles (age 22) died and it has been really hard on her.

"Now I lay be down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep, Angels watch me though the night and wake me with the morning light."

  • Yes, we pray before meals and at bedtime. I pray about our day and any needs of the family. I always pray that DD has a good night's sleep with no bad dreams, in Jesus' Name. We try to alway just pray from the heart, that way DD grows up knowing how to do the same instead of a memorized prayer. (Not that those can't be from the heart, but she will learn enough of those at Sunday school in church).
  • We haven't started at bedtime but before meals we have him fold his hands while we say grace.  He gets this impish grin on his face everytime and then when we're done, he says "aahhh-ahh."  Amen?
  • I pray with DD before bed. We usually pray for our family and thank God for our blessings followed by the Lord's prayer or the Apostle's creed. It's never really the same thing from night to night, but more of free flowing prayer.
  • I say the same one with DS as you. DD does the Lord's Prayer now that she is older.

  • We started praying before meals when they were ... 15-18m, somewhere in there. We do a little prayer as part of our naptime and bedtime routines, too. ("Free form," nothing memorized.)
