BFers - Please help

I EP and give my LO only breastmilk, no formula. The last few weeks off and on he has been really fussy and really gassy. I am not sure if it is from the milk and something I have been eating. Instead of cutting one thing out of my diet at a time, I am going to cut several things and then slowly add things back, until I figure out what the problem is. I have a few questions...

1- When I eat something, how long does it take to show up in my milk?

2- How long should I cut something out, before adding it again to see if that is what the problem is?

3- What are some typical foods that seem to cause this kind of a problem that would be good to try cutting out of my diet?

Re: BFers - Please help

  • 1. 4-24 hours

    2. I'd probably say a few days

    3. I know chocolate and peanut butter are common culprits

    1 - 4 to 24 hours. Everyone is different.

For 2 & 3, just Google what gas inducing foods are and avoid them. Broccoli is a main offender.

Try mylicon drops and bicycle kicks.

  • Garlic is the culprit for my LO, and it can stay in your system up to 3 days (although DS's fussing is worst for the first 24hrs after I eat it).

  • My MW said that most food issues arise from high dairy in mom's diet.  Lincoln had some stomach issues a week ago so I reduced the richer dairy products and milk from my diet and he hasn't had an issue since.  I plan to slowly add back in more dairy to confirm this is the issue.

  • A friend of mine discovered that her LO became gassy after drinking BM that had been stored and frozen near broccoli in the freezer. She ended up having to seal the BM bags in a ziploc container to keep the BM "untainted".
