Clumping Formula

I boil water for my formula, I then add the water to a pitcher, and then add the formula, stirring after every two scoops. Ive notice the formula starting to clump. Not small enough to go through the nipple but big enough to block the flow. I spend about 10 minutes total stirring the batch and using a spoon to take out all the caramelized-like clumps. Is there anything I can do to prevent the clumping or am I doomed to fishing them out? Does anyone else have this issue?

Also... I cant believe I'm on 0-3months board now!!!!=)

Is the water room temp or hot when you add the powder? If it's hot, that may be the problem. I've never had fomula clump before (mix a lot of formula at work in the NICU). You don't want to have to strain clumps out, because you're also removing calories your baby needs and he'll end up with "diluted" formula. I know that is not your intention, but it is a problem. I would try mixing it with room temp or cool water and see if that fixes your problem.

Try mixing with a wire wisk instead of a spoon... might help. Also, smaller batches. GL!

It is usually still pretty hot when I add the powder. I then let the formula cool before adding it to the bottles. I will let the water cool before adding the formula to see if that helps. Thank you. Also the clumps are not many, just 3-4 and they are as big as a button on a blackberry. Lol.

Are you using hot water because your LO prefers it? I use bottled room temp water and have no problems with clumping.

No, I boil the water before mixing the formula to sterilize it because im paranoid=) lol. After mixing the formula we put it in the fridge and bring it to room temp before feeding it to him.

Gentlease formula clogged up our bottle nipples very often. If your problem persists, maybe you could get one of those formula mixers. I never tried one, but who knows...Maybe it'll help you.

I use Similac and had that problem. I found that after it sits in the fridge for a few hours the clumps dissolve. Thats what I do. If i need a bottle right away and don't have time to let it sit, its not a problem because a few scoops in the bottle doesn't clump. I only have the clumping issue when making bigger batches of formula. 1ht

I make my daughters bottles just before feeding because shaking the bottle well gets rid of all of the clumps. I never understood premixing the formula because it takes even longer if you have to heat it up. My daughter drinks room temp formula. I leave the water jug on the counter and just add the powder and shake!

Same for us unless, like now its super cold outside so I use a bottle warmer but I dont make it too warm because of clumping

I've noticed we get less clumps with hot water when we add the water to the powder instead of powder to water. Don't know if it really matters but we get a lot less clumps.
