umbilical hernia

So I don't know anything about umbilical hernias and everyone keeps freaking me out about them.  My little man has one and hes 9weeks old. It hasn't gotten any smaller. is that normal

Re: umbilical hernia

  • DS has one.  My pedi said it's no big deal and should correct itself by his 1-yr. birthday.  It's mostly a cosmetic thing.

  • So it really is supposed to go away...good...ive just heard not that many good things about the pedi my son sees. Rural areas don't offer much though

This!  DS's just started getting a little less noticeable last week.  Pedi said nothing to worry about.

  • My DS healed at about 4 months. He would make it worse by pushing too hard to poo...poor guy. Once his digestion chilled out it went away.

Worst case scenario is your LO would need surgery. I know 3 people who have had it done...one at 6 months..and all up and playing same day. HTH =)

  • My pediatrician said that it'd go away by a year, and that if it didn't it would just take a few stitches and some anesthesia to fix. She said don't do anything to it, i.e. push it in, or do any OWT (using a silver dollar and an ace bandage to wrap it up and push it in). My pediatrician also said that some people even use duct tape... and that we shouldn't do that either...lol!
