How long did you TTC before getting tested? Do they recommend waiting a year before a semen analysis, or is this something that you can schedule without a referral?

We were on cycle 7 when we scheduled DH's SA, but he's 36 and had an undescended testicle as a child, which can result in fertility problems, so we had reasons to do it on the early side (i.e., before the 1-year mark).
Whether you can do it without a referral may depend on your insurance company and the doctor's office. We were encouraged to get one by my OBGYN, who referred us to a urologist (who sucked), who referred us to a lab that would do it. Our insurance didn't cover it, but I don't think a referral was required. A prescription was though.
My OBGYN ordered one for my DH. We had been trying for about 7-8 months, but we are both over 35. Also, DH had a testicle removed as a teenager due to torsion. According to our RE, that didn't have any affect on DH's numbers, but we didn't know that then. :P

We had one early at 3 months, but only because we found out DH has Low Testosterone.
ETA: Forgot to add- He went to a urologist who ordered the initial SA at a regular lab. But then my OB sent him to an RE to have it done at their lab because she felt it would be handled better there.
I have a follow up - did you just pay out of pocket? Does anyone mind saying how much it cost?
My OB/Gyn suggested a SA this cycle or next, assuming no BFP. I don't think my insurance will cover it until February when I turn 35. I would hate to "waste" that time if it's something we can catch sooner.
Thanks!

I think we paid $280, but I think other women on here have paid less.
DH had it done around 10 months, mostly because he was away for work for two months so I figured it would be good do at least get something TTC related then. Our insurance paid for it...good luck!
oh yea and he just went to his doctor and asked for it.
Thanks for all the responses! This is only our third cycle trying, but I've had this underlying fear that there may be something up with DH's sperm...for an honestly stupid reason.

We waited 6 months, and I think most offices will do it at 6 months if you have been charting and you seem ok. At that point it is time to get your DH tested.

We were almost at the year mark ttc when the RE ordered the SA. We just paid for it oop - $125. I wouldn't wait a few months for insurance to cover such a minimal cost. It gave me peace of mind.

Me too. I've always had this fear that there would be a problem, but always thought it was just me being a pessimistic worry-wart. Now that we've been TTC almost 10 months and I've been charting for 5 cycles and everything is looking good so far on my end, I am really worrying.
My DH went to his doctor for an overall check-up, and told him how long we had been trying. The doctor gave him a script for it. I haven't checked yet if it will be covered or not (well, I tried to, but got a big runaround and haven't called back yet). We have sort of been avoiding yet just because we're both scared to get bad news.
While I don't think you necessarily need one after 3 months, if you have a reason to suspect something is up (even if it seems like a stupid reason), it can't hurt for your husband to at least mention it to his doctor and see what he says.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will have MH just mention it to his doctor and see if it is even a reason to be worried. I feel stupid for being worried about it after only 3 cycles, but it's been in the back of my mind even when we were dating.
