HELP...9 month old NOT sleeping at night

I am a nanny to a 9 month old little girl who hates to sleep at night now for some reason. She takes two naps during the day about a 15 to 30 min in the morning and about a two hour nap right after lunch. Her parents have tried CIO, rocking, co-sleeping, she is at her wits end and needs some advice! She has the same routine every single night. Dinner, bath, book, movie and bottle. She goes to sleep with no problem but will not stay asleep! So any suggestions are welcome! Thank you

  • Wish I could help, but you just described my kid.  He goes down easy but he wakes up at least twice a night.  As much as I hate to say it, my theory is that sleep is like every other developmental thing--- they'll do it when they're ready.  le sigh.
My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

hahaha...you're know that I'm on your team (Team No Sleep). =)  Having two kids, I can honestly say that babies are all different (even ones that share the same genes!) DD#1 was a horrible newborn and cried EVERY hour, but by 3 months, was sleeping through the night and even transition to her own room and big girl bed later on with no issues.

DD#2 will NOT stay asleep at night.  We thought we were doing well about a month ago and she was only waking up once and sometimes not at all.  But then with molars coming in for over a month now, it's been horrible.  We wake up at least 3-4 times.  Even when we tried co-sleeping and holding her while we're sleeping, she still wakes up crying because of the molar pain.

The only thing that gets me through it is the fact that they HAVE TO eventually start sometime right????

  • Maybe she's overtired by bedtime? I know this this sounds so crazy, but try putting her to bed about 30 minutes earlier than usual...when my little one is overtired and exhausted she doesn't sleep well at all- doesn't go to sleep easily and wakes often during the night.

My little sleep hater finally started sleeping through the night around 14 months, I never thought the day would come. She still will sometimes wake once or twice  (or more) but it's usually because she's cutting teeth or something...

  • My DS2 still wakes up, so I may be no help, but I would suggest not doing a movie so close to bed time, as it might be stimulating.
  • Perhaps try overnight diapers? They are hard to find in sizes smaller than 4, but they helped DD. She still wakes up a couple of time during the night but she goes back to sleep with a bottle of water in no time (pedi told us not to feed her more milk while she's sleeping)

This is exactly what I was thinking.
