I have alluded to some health issues we have been dealing with but wasn't comfortable going into too much detail. We received some good news today and I just wanted to update you ladies.
A bit of background. Kate had an irregular CBC come back about a month ago (it showed low platelets and low mature white blood cells - specifically nearly no neutraphils - the component of the blood that fights off infection). We repeated to CBC at Texas Children's hospital and the results came back even more grim than the initial results. We had a consult with hematology and oncology over the phone the next day but didn't learn much - just answered lots of questions.
We spent all day last Monday (the 22nd) at the Texas Children's Cancer Center meeting with doctors and having lots of labs run.
We were told that one of two things was wrong with our sweet girl. Either her body was attacking and destroying her WBCs (meaning it was autoimmune) or her bone marrow was not functioning properly and not making mature WBCs (meaning leukemia or some type of bone marrow cancer).
My husband and I have spent the last week worrying like crazy. We left town early for Thanksgiving so we could be surrounded by family and distracted a bit.
I finally heard from the doctor today (after some misunderstanding about when we would know that majorly stressed me out) and we got good news.
Kate does NOT have cancer. All of the tests run for leukemia and cancer markers came back negative! Praise God! Such a relief!
However, we still do not know what is going on with her blood. The additional labs run last week showed issues with some antibodies and her immuglobulins. Kate's doctors are consulting with the Immunology group to see what additional tests we need to run.
At this point, her hematologist things it is either some type of syndrome or an autoimmune issues.
I'm excited that we are not dealing with cancer but now on a mission to figure out what is going on so we can properly treat these issues. Any and all thoughts and prayers are appreciated as we figure this all out.
