Baby jerking/spasm in sleep - anything to worry about?

DS is almost 9 months old and as far as I know, he's never done this before.

I was rocking him to sleep and he was pretty much out when his whole body jerked and he woke up.  not a big deal, he went back to sleep right away.  But then as we rocked some more, it happened again.  Then I noticed that his hand would twitch, and then his foot and the other foot and then he jerked again.  this time he didn't wake up.  we rocked for awhile longer before I put him in his crib, and I'd say it happened 10 times total.  Then I watched him in his crib and his hands were twitchy (I haven't seem him move much in his sleep other than to roll over) and then he jerked again, this time enough to wake him back up.

We have his 9 month appt on Friday and I'll definitely bring it up then, but do you think it's something that you would call about sooner?  Part of me thinks it's just his body releasing tension or something but maybe it's not?

Re: Baby jerking/spasm in sleep - anything to worry about?

  • DS does this as he is falling asleep and the Dr said it was nothing to worry about, just a muscle twitch, or he's not really asleep and trying to wake himself back up. For us, its when he's almost asleep, but not completely out...and more often if he is overtired before we put him down. If it happens ALL the time, I would be more concerned. Definitely talk to the Dr, but hopefully its nothing.

  • thanks.  DS was definitely overtired (it was about an hour past his bedtime) and when I described it to DH he said it sounded like when DS is trying to wake himself back up...but the kid was so tired there was no waking back up.  I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it and mention it on friday.

I have no clue about the twitching but did I miss an announcement?!

Ha, no.  I put the ticker in there, but I don't have much time to post during the day right now, so I figured no one would really notice.  My first appt is next friday and assuming all is well, I'll officially say something then!

  • DS's hands get a little shaky when he is tired, but I've never seen him twitch so hard that he wakes himself up. I personally, would definitely call the pedi, but that is because we are very conservative with any possible neuro issues.

    PS- Congrats! :-)

  • Sounds like a hypnic jerk, which is totally normal. Non-sleeping jerks can be signs of a problem, though.

  • I would say it is probably myoclonic jerks, common upon falling asleep in babies. I even get them sometimes, they wake me up.

but definitely mention it and keep an eye out to see if it is a repetitive event. And Congrats!!!!!
