anyone else terrified of labor

my girlfriend had her first contraction last night and she waited till they were 5 minutes apart to go to the hospital.  She was admitted last night, she called me this morning saying she was 2cm dilated.  I assumed she would have the baby by now so i texted her and she was no where close actually they went home because she was not dilating fast enough.  She said it's still pretty painful.  She decided to go home because she was hungry and they don't let you eat at the hospital.  so funny because i would do the same thing.  Anyway it got me thinking about labor and the closer i get to the due date the more anxious about it i get.

  • The only thing about having a baby that really freaks me out is having to actually give birth eventually.

  • TERRIFIED!  I hate going to the hospital to visit people.  I am looking at it as one or two days that are rough and I can handle it.
  • Sorta.. but not giving too much thought because since it's not here yet,, but I know it'll be close!
  • yes! fear and money are the only reasons I don't have 10 kids by now.  Indifferent

  • I have not really thought about it, but being that it's coming faster then I thought and we took our first class last week and watched a video....I'm petrified!  I know it's totally worth it and many women go through it everyday, but the thought of me going through it.....WOW!

  • I would be terrified if I was going to the hospital, I hate hospitals, but we're going to a local birth center that's way less intimidating, so I'm not really scared...  just looking forward to it being over with.  :)

  • I am soo terrified of labor. My friend just had a baby 2 weeks ago, her water broke at 5:30am and by 5pm she had her little girl in her arms. She said she progressed really fast but it was soo painful, she even got an epidural. I'm scared that it's going to hurt more because I'm so tiny being only 5'3 and thinking that my girl parts are smaller lol. Maybe it's just having crazy pregnancy brain or something but I'm freaking out.

lol. I feel the same exact way. Shortness of breathe for sure. I'm too small for maternity clothes and to big for my clothes. I hope I don't offend anyone but I don't know how over heavy people do it? I can't wait to have the baby and get this excess fat off of me. I have never weighed more than 125lbs and now I'm at 144 ugh...  It's just so hard to bend over, tie my shoes, put socks on, walk up the stairs, shave, etc. it's so weird how dramatically your life changes with a belly lol.

  • I used to be afraid of labor until I started researching different natural birth methods. I started reading about hypnobabies and then found a hypnobabies birth story blog and it actually made me excited for childbirth. I now have the hypnobabies program and I can't wait to get started. I think the more educated you get about childbirth the less scary it seems. I've even watched some hypnobabies births on youtube and they don't seem nearly as scary as a regular birth.

  • Oh yeah, totally. For me, it's the fear of the unknown...because I just don't know how it's going to go, and there are a million scary scenarios to think about.

I've been good about keeping pretty relaxed about it and I plan to go into it educated, but with an open mind. ::eep!::

  • I am scared of the long labor... sounds like your friend is having one.
  • It goes back and forth for me.  Some days I am completely at ease with the idea.  That my boyfriend will be there and that I can handle the pain and that it will be so exciting.  Other days... I have just freak outs where I realize how big my belly is and where the baby has to come out of.  Oi vey... I have been asking my friends a million questions about their labors.

  • It's a required part of having a baby and everyone's experience is different.  Don't let others scare you!  Your labor could be a breeze and you would worry for nothing.  Besides, there's nothing you can do to avoid it, so why stress?  lol

I was 135 pre-pregnancy and i don't look at scales anymore, i'm bigger than you though, i think i've gained the 35 we are allowed, but i gained most in the beginning, its like i got big everywhere even my feet grew.  i can't wait to get the weight off either, i use to feel so much more in shape, now putting shoes on is a workout anymore.  my belly is pretty big already.

my friend had a pretty easy pregnancy and i'm hoping i get an easy labor because my pregnancy has been far from easy.....i need to start researching labor so i'm less scared i guess

  • Me!!! I worry about it more than anything else! Constantly. Am I going to be able to do it naturally? What if I take pain meds and they don't work? What if the baby is too big? What if I need a C-Section? Am I strong enough? How long is it going to take? What if my hip re-dislocates? What if I tear? I'm just a bundle of nerves, to the point where I have cried a few times... so, yea. Very scared and such. Going to have to figure out something.

I don't see why not. The program is about eliminating your fears and changing your perception of labor. It is really interesting since it talks about how we have been "trained" to think labor is supposed to be painful, etc based on all the tv shows, movies, etc and how birth is depicted in them.

You can go to the hypnobabies website and download 2 free mp3's and that is what hooked me. The first one is called "What is Hypnosis for Childbirth" and goes over the entire philosophy. The 2nd is called "Relax Me" and it puts me to sleep every time. Here is the website:

  • This is my 2nd (DS is 5) and I am scared too!  I was induced, had vaginal delivery with DS, who weighed 9+lbs and didn't have an epidural.  It was very hard and difficult, but I think more than anything because DS's father (exH) is a total d-bag and was actually MEAN to me during labor.

I know that this time around will be 1000x different and better.  I really hope that my body will know what to do this time around.  I am hopefull especially since I am having BH contractions this time and never had them with DS.  Also (and most importantly) DH is AMAZING and so supportive, I know he will make this labor and delivery a positive experience.  Oh, and I am much more open to an epidural this time....Smile

  • It's funny because up until I actually got pregnant I was afraid of labour and my philosphy was "They make drugs for a reason, I'm gonna take whatever I can get" but now that I'm here - I'm not sure.  I'm still worried about pain to a degree - but I figure I'm not opposed to epidurals etc but I'd prefer to avoid it and try other pain preventative measures prior to using that one!!  We've signed up for lamaze so hopefully I learn some good coping strategies there!!

A friend of mine sent me a link to a local company (who I am also signed up for Lamaze with) and that they're now teaching Hypnobirthing...I am totally interested in the materials, but not in the $350 I'd have to spend to get the course!!!

This is me.  I'm a little anxious but have read and heard so many accounts of epidurals gone wrong it makes me not want to get one.  Actually the thought of giving birth naturally doesn't freak me out as much as the thought of something going wrong and docs having to intervene.

Yes - I have heard of it and I'm with you. To each their own I guess but it weirds me out a bit and I don't see how its possible.

Good luck with the hypnobabies! I bought my package off of Ebay and I saved about $40.

This is exactly why I looked into Hypnobabies. Its about $150 through their website for the home study course and you can find them even cheaper on Ebay which is where I got mine. A lot of women do the homestudy and have success.

  • I had anxiety issues before getting pregnant. So thinking about labor does scare me! I am more scared of things going wrong. Like dying or having the baby really sick.

  • I have been pretty calm about labor, I mean you HAVE to do it now that you're pregnant, and worrying about it won't change that lol.  But now that it keeps getting closer and closer I am starting to feel a bit more nervous.  I think a lot of that comes from the fact that I've decided to try going natural, and I'm worried it'll get to be too much for me.  I guess we'll see in 99 days or so!
  • The labor and delivery was actually the easiest part of my first pregnancy.  I had a fantastic epidural and everything was "hearts and rainbows."  I am crossing my fingers that this labor is similar.

  • The labor and delivery freaks me out.  That is one of the reasons I waited so long to get pregnant.  When we were trying to get pregnant I thought when this happens some day I'm just going to ask my doctor for an elective caesarean because I couldn't handle the idea of actually having a baby on my won.  Now that I'm pregnant I actually feel less scared, the scariest part for me now is making sure I do whatever I can to keep our LO healthy.  I am trying to remind myself daily that yes it is going to be hard and probably painful but women do it everyday and the reward at the end is going to be amazing. I get this a book on natural birth methods and it discusses how woman from different cultures handle labor naturally and different ways to speed up and reduce pain with out meds during the process.  I'm crossing my fingers that we remember some of the tricks in March.

  • The ONLY thing about l&d that I'm worried about is who is on call at the hospital.  At our community hospital where I'm delivering, there are 3 doctors.  Mine, her partner (who most of my friends go to and love) and then an old guy in his 70s who I don't want within 5 miles of me when I go into labor.

So it's been a matter of prayer that when ever I do go into labor, I will have one of the two acceptable doctors on call.

  • I'm scared of being in labor/ pain for a long time, not being dialated enough, and then having the doctors tell me I need a c-section. I'd rather have the c-section right away then go through 36 hours in labor to find out I need one anyway.

  • Yeah... I try not to think about it.
