Babies: 3 - 6 Months

If your LO goes to bed around 7-8..how many times do they wake?

From 7p-7a (ish) how many times is your LO up?

DS goes to sleep good enough. So for example, bedtime 730p, wake at 815pm for more milk, back in bed 845pm, back up @ 930 for more milk. Then DH will do a dreamfeed at 11pm, DS will wake at 2-3am & then up at 7am. The last 2 nights he was up around 2 & 4.

So that's 4-5 times.

How do I consolidate the 2 - 45 min wakings? He just won't stay awake enough to eat good. It's like he sleeps between cluster feeds.

I can't tell if the dreamfeed is good or bad. From 6-8 weeks, he would take a 5-6 oz bottle at 9-930 & sleep until 2ish. I can do that. But then the 45 min crap started.

  • Ugh! I can't imagine! Eli goes down at 7:30 or so after drinking an 8 oz. bottle. He wakes anywhere from 2-4 for another bottle and then sleeps til 6 or 7. I wish I had some advice for you. Eli's sleeping schedule certainly isn't anything I trained him to do. He just does it on his own. Maybe your LO is going through a growth spurt and will soon grow out of it. GL

  • Once, about an hour after she goes down (7:30-8:00)  So around 9:00, then she sleeps until 7-8am.

  • K goes down at 7 and sleeps until 5:30 or 6.  We did not sleep train at all - she has just gradually started STTN.

Pretty much this, since DD turned 4 months (she was STTN before that time), but she nurses between 2 and 4 instead of getting a bottle.

  • Viv goes down between 7 and 7:30 (last night it was closer to 8:30 because she took a nap because we were out and about in the evening) and sleeps until around 4:30 to 5 am (this mornign was 5:30, yay!)

She gets up, eats, and then usually stays up an hour or so and takes another shortish nap after that.

  • He is usually up 2 times a night, if we are lucky once. Lately, he has been going down at about 8 sleeping until 2-3, waking up to eat and then sleeping until 7ish. We never have a problem with him waking up right after he goes down. Is it possible your LO isn't really for bed but just taking cat naps around that time and that is why he is up 45 minutes later? Does he wake himeslf up at those times? Have you tried to give him the paci or soothe him back to sleep that second time? He shouldn't have to wake up 45 min later to eat and then 45 minutes after that too. Maybe adjust nap time. Or cluster feed earlier in the afternoon every hour or so so that when he goes down that first time, he sleeps 3-4 hours instead of waking every 45 minutes. Does he eat enough during the day? He might be trying to get in extra calories. Wow- I totally just asked you a bunch of questions. Sorry! Good luck!

  • Whoa, that's a lot.  Mine go to bed at 8 and get up at 7.  DS2 gets up zero times, and DS1 sometimes gets up once around 5 for a quick bottle before going back down.

Is he falling asleep before finishing the first bottle?  I know it's early, but perhaps starting bedtime sooner would make him more awake.  He shouldn't need to eat 45 minutes afterwards if he's getting enough, so perhaps some soothing techniques might be in order if you know he's full.

He's just a sleepy baby. He has a hard time staying awake period! I do try to cluster feed more but he just WILL NOT nurse or take a bottle if he doesn't want to. We have tried to soothe him back to sleep but end up feeding him 99% of the time. He usually eats every 2-3 hrs during the day. Today was 3hrs15 min btw feeds.

I agree to try maybe pushing bedtime a little later and have more awake time before that so he's really tired, and try comforting him instead of always giving a bottle.  He may need more ounces during the day to make up for it, but start by just trying to reduce one feeding during the night.

Mine sleeps all the way through. 8/9ish until anywhere between 5-7am  She used to wake in the middle of the night and DH would always give her a bottle, but when I got up with her once I tried putting her back to sleep and she slept through, so she gradually learned she didn't need that bottle and made up for it during the day.  My DD eats a lot before bedtime, and I always make sure she eats really well before going down.

Ignore the part of my post above since I posted after you answered all of those ideas I suggested.  I am at a loss for what you could try if it does seem like he is really hungry at those times.  He just might not be ready yet.

  • DD sleeps all night... Her bath time is around 9 then big bottle (6oz) and bed, wakes up around 6:30 & 7:30am... Try putting LO to bed a little later, also our pediatrician told us NEVER dream feed LO just let LO sleep...

  • Logan's usually down around 8, sometimes a bit earlier, sometimes a bit later. Last night sucked hard (up every hour from 2 until 8), but on a typical night, he's up at 2:30 and 6:15 before getting up for the day around 8am...

  • Ethan used to go to bed around 8 but the past week it's been at 9 and he'll sleep until about 5-6am then feed for half an hour then back to bed until about 8:30.. he eats about 6-8 oz before bed and then 6oz at the 530 time.
  • Ugh. DD1 used to pull that 45 minute crap. It was AWFUL. You never get that "ahhh, they're asleep" feeling. I'm sorry.  If your baby can' t finish a feed, maybe he's not actually hungry, but just sucking to pacify himself back to sleep. when along comes another natural waking (you know the 45 min sleep cycle) and he doesn't know how to put himself back to sleep. We eventually had to let her cry it out at bedtime (when she was older than your LO) and that was so hard, but it totally worked. DD2 never does this (knock on wood).
  • oh, also, dd1 would wake many many times at night like yours is. Again, we had to CIO. It was the advice of our pedi at 3+ months and we waited til she was a little older cause we thought we and she were not ready. I would feed her once per night when she cried in the 2am or later timeframe, and ignore all the other cries.

Again, it was so hard. But it worked and we had a happier baby. My DD2 is so different.

  • he goes to bed at 8, wakes at 12-2. Sleeps until 4, 530,630. So 4ish times. He probably wants to get up at 530 but I do my best to avoid that. Sometimes it doesn't work.

  • We found that dream feeds did nothing for us.  DS actually slept longer if we just let him sleep and skipped the dream feed.  Are you sure he's awake?  Sometimes DS cries in his sleep.  We pop a paci in his mouth and he literally passes right back out.  DS's bedtime is about 9 or 9:30 and he sleeps until 6.  We use bath time to soothe him when he's sleepy or hungry, but we want to hold off on his last bottle or don't want him to nap just yet.  I let him play in his bath for about 20 minutes then wash him real quick at the end.  Bath is followed by bottle and bed.

Maybe try a bath when he wakes up at 9:30?  Or around 8:45 when he starts to get sleepy?  Then instead of a nap, he would take a bath and bottle then go back to sleep.  It's worth a shot!  HTH!

  • In bed at 7:30.  Sometimes he wakes up hungry around 4, and the other nights he sleeps till 6:30ish when we get up for the day.  I think I would die if I was getting up 5 times a night.

  • DD goes to bed b/w 7:30 and 8pm and wakes up around 6:30-7am
  • DS goes down between 6:30-7:30 and wakes up to fuss for a few minutes around 9 (but puts himself back, no bottle, etc) and wakes for the day at 7am.  This was after we did Ferber, prior to which, we were up every 2 hrs feeding or rocking.  Ferber saved my sanity!
  • This was exactly me about 2 weeks ago. Up every 45 minutes. He really wasn't hungry, just not able to comfort himself any other way. SO, we ended up doing a modified CIO that I was comfortable with. I do recommend you read Ferber though. He gives good though as to WHY your baby would wake up confused and crying. I wouldn't let a baby as young as yours just cry it out, but I think a little crying and incremental soothing will help. Sometimes my LO just wakes up and babbles for 10 minutes and then falls back asleep, so if he's not full out crying, I wouldn't run in to feed him.
