Q about BF'ing with a cow's milk protein allergy

I have eliminated cow's milk (and related and hidden products) from my diet for about 12 days because DS2 is suspected to have an allergy to cow's milk protein.  He's 8 weeks.

Anyway, there were definite improvements in his symptoms..."baby acne"/excema cleared up immediately, congestion decreased, and most importantly, on days 7 he stopped having bloody, green diapers.  This lasted until day 11 when the green slimy poop and bloodiness came back.  I realized I ate some bread that had caramel color (a hidden cow's milk ingredient) in it.  There has been some improvement in the diapers since yesterday.

I guess my question is can just a small amount of an ingredient make the symptoms come back?  It seems to be improving a bit again, but trying to eliminate all milk ingredients is so overwhelming.

Thanks in advance.

  • It can take 3 weeks after you've eliminated all milk products to get them completely out of your system (and out of your BM) so you could still have some proteins in your milk, plus any from the bread.  I know it can be difficult to cut it all out (I never knew how many things contained milk until I started cutting it out for DD.)

We saw improvement that first week, but it took the entire 3 weeks for DD to get rid of all the symptoms.

  • That seems like such a small thing. DS1 has a dairy protein allergy and while he is super-sensitive, we have never had an issue with caramel coloring. I suppose anything is possible with such a young baby, though. Could it have been something else that you ate (like another allergen)?

  • Kristin, I thought it was a small amount too, but I couldn't think of anything else.

Suscq, so your LO had good and bad diapers for 3 weeks? I feel so discouraged that we had so much improvement and then the bad diapers again.

Her main reaction was horrible, painful gas and yes, we had it for the entire three weeks.  Once we got through those 3 weeks, she was a new (much happier) baby!
