Opinion question on traveling..

Would you travel on an airplane with a one week old baby?...to the Bahamas?

  • Hmmm.... maybe if I had like at least two experienced helpers with me... and I lived somewhere where it wasn't too long of a flight.

I know other people will have comments about germs, but the Bahamas sounds pretty good to me right now as I look out the window at the freezing rain.

  • LOL We were invited to a destination wedding in the Bahamas, all accomadations PAID FOR!!!

Only problem is, the wedding is 2 weeks after my scheduled c-section...  This is like a once in a lifetime opportunity, and my parents are going as well, along with my 3 sisters, so I would have plenty of help.

I was just worried about the germs and other things that accompany flying on an airplane!

  • No - I wouldn't personally travel anywhere with an infant that young.

  • Um, no. For several reasons.

    1. The baby won't really have any immunizations at that point, and a plane load of people is a petri dish for all sorts of things.

    2. You definitely won't have any kind of routine down by that point, even for feeding and diaper changes. The feeding part especially makes it difficult to plan for a trip like that.

    3. Aside from the kid, you couldn't pay me enough to travel 1 week post-partum. Some women still can't even sit comfortably by that point. Nevermind if you have any complications. What if you end up with a c/s and have an open wound? Remember the petri dish thing.

    4. If you are even considering this, please buy some very comprehensive travel insurance because I bet that you will not actually make the trip.

Also...we live in the Ft. Lauderdale, FL area, so it's only about a 40 minute flight...

  • No way. I love traveling but...

1.Have you ever had a c-section? I wasn't even able to get out of my own bed without help at one week PP. Maybe this is b/c mine was an emergency after hrs. of labor, but still  I would bet you won't feel like walking through the airport while toting bags and baby. I'd be exausted before I even got on the plane. You aren't even supposed to drive a car until 2wks after.

2.I wouldn't feel comfortable traveling in a plane prior to my LO recieving immunizations.

  • no way. for one... going anywhere with a one week old is no fun and two.. you will most likely still not be ready to do a lot of walking around at that time. I went to target a week after my baby was born and i almost passed out.
Sometimes it's okay to follow. (Picture is a clicky)

  • Its up to you and your comfort level at that point...

I might if I had my DH there and lots of other help.... but I would get good travel insurance, because you might not feel up to it!

This will be my 2nd c-section, first was an emergency after hours of labor, I was home from the hospital after less than 48 hours.  I was in a little pain, but was able to get up on my own and walk around just fine after a couple days.

  • Most Airlines won't let you travel with a baby less then 14 days old without doctors approval.  Check with the airline first.
  • No, we flew at 6 weeks and that was tough enough. Let alone having another toddler with you....even with help.

Plus I think some airlines require the baby to be at least 7 or 14 days old, I'd check that out.  But I wouldn't that early.

  • Wow! I ended up with 3 infections and didn't fully heal until 6wks PP. You just never know.

  • No not at all!!  I still have the same tank of gas in my car since before Ella was born on October 19!

  • I didn't even have a c-section, delivered vaginally and I could barely sit down at one week. There's a reason doctors tell moms to take it easy 6 weeks after baby too. I wouldn't even think about it at one week post-partum. Yikes.

  • Never. I love to travel, and do it with children, but not an international flight at one week old.
