Baby Names

Alexander

Cross-posted (with edits) to December board.

WDYT of this name? DH loves Alexander. I like it a lot too and don't have any other male names that I like more per se, even though there are others I think are basically equally as good. Just as with all of our considerations, I want to be devil's advocate and think of the potential problems.

The problem that comes immediately to mind is that Alexander happens to be extremely popular right now. Here's my question:When you think of Alexander as a name, do you roll your eyes because it's so popular right now? Like it's too trendy? Or is such a classic name that it doesn't matter that it's currently popular in addition? With the name being popular, our Alexander will inevitably have classmates with the same name. That's annoying and not preferred, but it's life if this is the name we want. What I don't want is for this name to be thought of as a "2009 (or 2010) trend name" or something.ETA: PLEASE let me know if there are any prominent Alexanders in pop culture right now. I was just scrolling down and saw the Twilight post subject heading and remembered I needed to vet all names against stuff like that (I know nothing about Twilight).

Re: Alexander

  • I can't think of any charactors (at least main) with the name Alexander. I like the name, but it is really popular. I would still be inclined to use it though.

If I was to name a kid Alexander I would pair it with James and call my kid AJ- having a nickname might help with all the Alexanders in class. However some of the others will be called Alex or Xander (zander) or something too.

Our neighbor's son is Alexander and also we have my SIL's son named Alexander. We differenciate them by Alex (the nieghbor) and Cousin Alex (the cousin uses this spelling Alexandre- its French and he is 1/2 french, dad is from France, and technically is pronounced a little different but usually just gets said Alexander)

  • I think it's a nice classic name.  I don't know why its so popular right now but it is.
  • My grandfathers name is Alexander so I like the name because of that reason.  The thing I do not like about this name that I find problematic about its popularity is the nn Alex which is now unisex.  Im not sure why I just hate it on boys now, I would suggest going with the nn Xander or Ax (which is what my grandfather went by) if you absolutely were going to shorten it.
  • I love the name Alexander.  It's a strong name that reminds me of "Alexander the Great."  It is popular right now but I consider it classic.
  • Alexander seems more classic to me and not trendy even though it's popular. There are plenty of prominent Alexanders throughout history.

I vote for using it if you love it.

  • There's no Alexander in Twilight Smile (though there is an Alec). I think Alexander McQueen (fashion designer) is the most prominent Alexander in pop culture, possibly because of his recent death.

It's a great, strong name. Go for it!

  • I have an "Alexander" and I was also concerned by the sudden peak in popularity (it's a family name in our case). But I stuck with it. It's a strong, classic and masculine name. I say go for it!

We avoided the nickname "Alex" in favor of "Xander". We played around with "Lex" or Alexi" as well, but Xander was a fit!

  • Alexander is classic, but I'm not a fan because I don't like any of the nicknames and they are inevitable. I don't think it's trendy at all.
  • Alexander is a wonderful name, its classic... never going out of style!  If you are worried about other kids having the same name you you call him Xander (pronounced Zander) instead of everyone calling him Alex....  Either way, I think it's a great name :) GL
  • I have an Aleksander and have yet to have another Alexander, Aleksander, Alekzander or any other variation in any of his classes (he is now 12). Though I have run accross a few Alex in the school but it is such a classic, handsome, strong name for any boy that no matter how popular it is, you can never go wrong with it.

  • Alexander is a great name.  It's one of my favorites.  I have a brother named Alexander, which is probably why I like it.

He went by Xander when he was younger.  Mostly because he has a twin brother named Duncan.  So they turned into Dunc and Zander.

He's Alex now and has been since he was about 18 or so.

  • Thanks for the feedback! We just might go with it!
