We didn't start CDing with B until he was about 7 months old, but I'd like to start with the new little one from the beginning. I have 22 BGs, which is a great stash for B now that he doesn't go through many diapers a day, and I'm thinking it should be good for the two of them together (right now we don't have to wash more than once a week since we only do it part time during the work week, and I'd almost rather wash more often because they get stinky in the pail).
Anyway, since I didn't CD when B was a newborn, should the BGs work out okay as long as the baby is at least 8 lbs? I'm thinking this is the minimum weight for BGs. I don't really want to invest any more money in diapers for a newborn, and I know my DH will definitely veto that idea. If all else fails, I guess we could do disposable in the early days, but anyone who used BGs with a newborn and had a good experience, I'd appreciate your input. Otherwise, out of curiosity, if you didn't use BGs for your newborn, what did you use?
ETA: B was 9 lbs, 2 oz at birth, and I know that doesn't mean everything, but that makes me think it's likely that I could have another large baby.
Re: Cloth diaper moms--a question
DS was 8lbs 6oz and the BGs fit him fine. We used some disposables that we took from the hospital and some that had been given to us as a gift for the first week and have been using the cloth ever since.
I do use some NB prefolds from when DD was a newborn, before we decided to go with BGs full time. I have about 27 BGs and did laundry every 4 days with DD using them full time. Now that DS is using them I wash about every other day....I forgot how many dipes newborns go through!!
In any case 22 should be an okay amount, if you need more you could always keep an eye out for the "seconds" sales they do at cottonbabies.com and snag some BGs for 12 bucks. GL!!
We did not CD a NB, but I know for sure that DD would not have fit into a BG on the smallest setting until around 2.5 or 3 months old. I still laugh that her estimated weight by 39 wk ultrasound was 9lbs. She was a teeny 6lb10oz. I would have most certainly needed NB sized prefolds or fitteds with covers for several months. I do think 22 BGs is plenty for two if you wash every 3 days or so.
When your older child is a bit older, you may again need more diapers during the day. Still, 22 is fine...just more washing needed. Older kids seen to hold their urine much longer and soak out of a diaper in a flash. We are seeing that with DD now. You might want to consider some prefolds or fitteds for use in the first few months. They can always be sold on the used market later if they are in good shape when you are done with them. PM me if you want to know where to do that.
Rylee was 8 pounds and I am pretty sure BG would have been really big and bulky on her. We used sposies until the meconium was gone and then we used swaddlebees (size small) until she was maybe 2 weeks. At that time she fit into the small fuzzi bunz. We didn't get BG until she was older (6 months maybe?)
Parker was under 6 pounds at birth. He didn't fit into the BG until about 2 months.

Like someone else mentioned we used sposies I'd gotten at showers, etc until DS was about 9.5 or 10 lbs and then started on cloth. I use both BG organic AIO and BG 3.0 pocket both at the lowest snap with no problem but I don't think they would have fit snug enough for those first few weeks. DS was 8 lbs when he came home- I'd say he was about a month when we started cloth.
I still only have 18 diapers, and 12 I use most and I just wash every day a small load, no problems and less stink!
