Mirena users..come on down!

DH and I are pretty sure DD will be our only child, but we don't want to do anything permenent like a vasectimy. I also don't want to have to worry about daily birth control either. I was thinking about getting mirena, but I have read about some pretty scary side effects. I just wanted to get some opinions about it. If you have it. Did it hurt to get it put in? I read it has strings? How does that work? Did you have any side effects or problems with it?

  • I have Mirena.  It didn't really hurt getting it put in.  It felt more like another internal, so I was like "Whatever".  It does have strings, but you really can't feel them from the outside and DH didn't even feel them himself when we were intimate.  The only side effects I have experienced was the bleeding after having it put in (You can bleed for up to 3 months!), and it felt a bit pokey after being put in.  But after a couple of days that went away and I can't even tell that I have anything.

  • I had one after DS and I will be getting one in January.  It was uncomfortable to have put it and had some cramping with insertion, but it wasn't horrible.  Not looking forward to it, but worth getting again.  I did take 4 ibuprofen before my appt.

I had spotting on and off for a long time after I got it put in.  I contemplated getting it taken out after 6 months (normal spotting time), but my doc said it could be from bfing and not the Mirena, and I didn't want to risk getting it pulled and having the spotting not go away (wasting the good BC and $$!).  Once I quit pumping at work at 11months PP, I quit spotting and started having regular 4wk cycles with light periods and minimal cramping.  I really liked having Mirena.  DH said he could feel the strings, but wasn't bothered by it (which was nice because then I didn't have to check them myself!).

  • I just got mine placed last week. This was my first time having it, and it wasn't bad at all. They did an ultrasound first to check my uterus, then it took maybe 3 minutes to place. there was a little pinch and some cramping. I would take some ibuprofen before you go. I didn't and it wasn't bad, just menstrual like cramps for a couple hours on and off. I did bleed a little bit, but I was spotting from period before she put it in. They did a vaginal ultrasound afterward to make sure it was placed in the right spot and that was it. My DH says he can feel the strings, but it isn't bad. I might go and have them trimmed shorter in a couple weeks so he can't feel them. I can't feel it at all, and you are supposed to check yourself once a month to make sure you can feel the strings. I felt up there and felt them. They showed me at the doctors office what the strings were and it is identical to fishing line. I have spotted off and on since then, but that could be from breastfeeding too. My friend has had hers for 4 years and hasn't had a period at all. She stopped spotting after a couple months. Hope this helps!
  • I PPH the Mirena.  Had one before TTC.  It hurt going in, but I hadn't had kids then so my cervix was different.  Had no side effects and no period at all for the 5 years I had it.  Definitely going back to it after our next (and probably last) child.
