NBR: couch slipcovers or furniture reupholstery

Has anyone ever used a couch slipcover? Does it look completely cheesy? I had one a long time ago right after college to cover a god awful 70's burlap material couch. It was ill fitting, but I think because it was such an old couch with an outdated style, but it did the trick (for college kids anyway!) Plus, anything was an improvement over the actual couch fabric. But it took a lot of tucking, and didn't look super nice.

We have a couch I really like--it's super comfy. But the blue & tan stripe of the fabric doesn't go with what I want to do in that room. A new couch isn't in our budget for that room right now, so I considered a slipcover. DH is pretty opposed to the idea, saying it'll look cheap or cheesy. But it's either that or have the couch reupholstered, which I gather would cost just about as much as a new couch (correct me if I'm wrong, if anyone has any experience there).

Does anyone have any recs for a nice, relatively inexpensive slip cover? I've checked Surefit, as I know they're a main retailer of them, and I'm not really loving any of their styles. I want one either in red or brown.

TIA!

I HATE HATE HATE my slipcovers - but not because they look cheesy or cheap. We got them since our furniture was VERY expensive and new when we had Wesley. Unfortunately, since our friends are all bigger than we are, when they come over and sit on our furniture, the slipcovers slide - so the back of the couch is exposed and the back of the cover is coming up onto the seat cushion.

We have a slipcover for one of our couches; it's from Sure Fit: https://www.surefit.net/

    I've been satisfied. Yes

EDIT: Nevermind; I just saw you looked at Sure Fit.  Pardon my mommy brain.

I tried slip covers and hated them.  I think unless you get a custom fit, they look horrible.  Or maybe I just had really hard couches to cover d/t their shape?  Maybe you could find a nice used affordable couch on craigslist?

Not a problem! Do you have a pic of yours? I guess I'm skeptical because I want to see one on a "real" couch. Of course the ones online look like they fit perfectly, but I'm sure they don't IRL! We have a pretty "basic" couch style, so I want to think it'd work... but I don't know. :-(

We have a surefit slipcover on a loveseat in J's play area in the basement. It does the job (covering white upholstery that was free from my parents), but is not my favorite because it does have to be repositioned after you sit on it a few times. A trick to keep things in place a little better is to roll up magazines and stick down behind the cushions.

Hughes, you could TOTALLY make a custom slipcover with your sewing skills, which would look a lot better than generic ones. The Nester (https://www.thenester.com/) slipcovered all of her couches with the help of this blogger (https://pinkandpolkadot.blogspot.com/search/label/slipcovers). She does have a $10 e-book if you wanted more help than her blog provides (https://pinkandpolkadot.blogspot.com/p/lazy-girls-guide-to-custom-slipcovers.html).

We have slip covers on our couches.  They are ok.  The couches themselves suck and we desperately need new ones but that's not in the cards right now.  We inherited these couches when DH's brother got new ones.  This is the hideousness that is our couch:

and this is with it covered (not the best pic but you get the idea)

When they are freshly washed they fit pretty good.  Top corners of our couch are kinda rounded and I think the cover is made for more of a squared off corner so that bunches up a little but a couple throw pillows make it look better.  They do slip some like pp said when people sit on them but I don't stress over that too much.  I just tug them back down in place.  They definitely aren't as nice a new couch but they do the job for us.  I ordered mine off of Kmart.com.
