6 month well baby visit and a Thyroid question

We just got back from DS 6  month well baby visit.

LO is 12 IBS 4 OZ  and 26"   . This puts him at 1% range. May be an issue. Crying     My Pedi said he is very impressed with how active and bright he seems and is hitting all milestones! He said we are doing a great job.

And also told us to really start having him eat colorful veggies, fruits, and even meat and egg YOLKS. And he then mentioned that a mix of purees and finger foods would be an awesome way to go (So he actually told us modified BLW was great, without us asking). So that is good.

BUT with his weight so low and the fact we dropped 2 percentiles he had us go get a blood test done for LOs thyroid.  He said that the way his belly button goes and the way he holds his mouth is in line with other patience that had the issue as well. Does anyone have any information on thyroid issues?

But with all this he also told me he could just be a tiny baby and it may just be what he is supposed to be. He also told me how proud he is of me breastfeeding and told me to keep going and not feel that my milk is the reason for this.

I'm really worried....

  • I'm sure it's really hard, but I would just try to focus on the positives for now.  Being active and bright is a great thing!  Try not to worry Mama! Everything will work out, one way or another.  Hugs.

Yea, I feel better and more optimistic now. I looked it up and it said that babies with a thyroid are usually not very active, sleep a lot, and may miss milestones. And my DS is fighting a nap right now, hitting milestones, and VERY active. Also MIL told me it is not a huge deal and can be fixed wit pills. My pedi did say it was just to be on the safe side and unlikely. He is probably a little peanut.

LO has never been sick and so I think it is just that new mom panic that set in. First time something was "wrong".

Awww.  Hugs mama!  Sounds like your pedi is being both supportive and proactive.  Hope you get some answers soon!

  • I feel ya mama. When something isn't "right" with your LO, you kind of freak out for a moment! My DD was 5 months before she was diagnosed with reflux and I felt horrible for letting it go so long undiagnosed. :( It sounds positive though with your DS hitting all his milestones and being active. I personally have hypothyroidism and it is easily treated. I am sending good vibes that all is good with your little dude. :)
