Is Micah girly?

Cuz I think we're going with it. Your first opinion on the name would be greatly appreciated! :-)

Re: Is Micah girly?

  • Micah is one of my very favorite boy names, but H hates it with a passion.

I always thought it was a boys name until one of my friends said she knew a girl by that name, so who knows.

Yeah, that's what just happened to me, thus why I'm second guessing. Personally I feel that classic biblical names that have been male for litterally thousands of years should stay that way but.....what do I know.

  • I like it and don't think it's girly at all.  It's a classic biblical male name.  That being said, I'm sure there are plenty of folks who think that any name that ends with an "ah" sound = girl.
  • Micah is a boy's name and should stay that way IMO

  • It's unisex.  The only Micahs I've ever met have been girls though, so yes I think it's kinda girly.

  • I'd only heard it as a boy's name (and pronounced Mee-Kah) but a girl came into the ER a couple weeks ago, and her name was spelled Micah but prounounced Mike-ah.  It's always been a boy name to me though, and not a girly one.
  • No. Not girly at all.

  • I've only ever heard it as a boy's name. It doesn't sound girly to me. While it's NMS particularly, I don't hate it either.

  • Totally boy, I've never heard of/met a girl with this name. It's a great name.
  • Well really, I guess my real issue is, is it GIRLY? I don't so much have a problem with a girl HAVING the name, but i don't want people to see "Micah" on a list and assume it's a girl. I mean, there are girls out there named Riley, but the boy Rileys do alright yes?
Any parents of unisex-named boys have any helpful experiences?

Unrelated side-note- sometimes I call him Mickey as a nn. Kinda started to irritate dh, but it's grown on my now lol!
  • Micah is a boy's name. I hate it when people put it on their girls - it's terrible.

There are quite a few names my husband dislikes because they're "girly" - and I actually dislike those names, too. They include Sebastian, Tristan, etc. I think that if you're worried about it being too girly, go with Michael.

  • The only Micahs I know are boys. In fact, my husband's cousin Micah is a very tough Army officer stationed in Afghanistan right now. Not girly in any way! ;-)
  • In my opinion, I've always felt it's a little girly.

Though traditionally a boy name, unfortunately it has come to be a girls name, at least around here....as I teacher if I saw this name I would automatically assume girl, because of past associations as well as it's feminine qualities.

  • It's a classic Biblical name so I have no idea why someone would use it on their daughter. I've never heard of it for a girl. It's not girly at all.

  • To me, it's a boy name, and I love it. I've known one girl with this name, but she spelled it Myka. I hope it doesn't turn into an Ashley or Dana, which were originally boy names but are now predominantly girl names.

  • The only Micah I know is a woman in her 50's, so I do think it's girly.

I didn't know it was a biblical name until someone mentioned it here.

    Sebastian is girly? Huh.

Micah is totally a boys name, and I would never see it and think girl. And as someone whose son has a name that is now being used by girls I would say it is annoying but not like it is the biggest deal in the world.

  • I love this name. It's on our list. I've worried about it being girly b/c that was my mom's reaction, but like people have said it's a classic biblical name. I have asked honest friends who think it's definitely a boys name. So, it's remaining on my list.
  • It's a boys name but it has started to become popular as a girls name. Not really sure why...

  • I don't think it's girly at all.  I've only met boys with this name.  Plus it mostly makes me think of mica, which is a stone, and from a hippie standpoint most rock names are boys.

  • eh, IMO, its a traditional mens name so who cares?

I tend to think those who dismiss an obviously male name for being too "girly" are the same parents who won't let their boys play with dolls and then tell them its ok to beat up the "girly" boys on the play ground.

  • I knew a girl named Micah who was named for her dad (Michael). I hated it on her. To me, it's still 100% a boys' name.
