Help help help (BF)

I am having a big problem today. My LO will only take the left breast, and has done that since birth. I am pretty sure nothing will come out of the right, it is much smaller and no longer leaks. So she is constantly on the left side, and today it got very very hard, and really heavy. When she latches on, it hurts so intensely, I cry a bit. The nipple is so raw and red, I can't even touch it, just rubbing the lanolin on it hurts so badly. I am not sure, is the hardness and pain normal? I mean, I figured my milk had already come in, so did I just get more? I don't know how I can continue nursing with this much pain and constant feeding on one breast. Will pumping hurt less? Could I get milk to come back in on the other side, if I pump? I am having such a hard time, and the LC that came over, just says to stick with it, but I don't know if I can. I don't even know if she is getting enough. I am so distraught and I worry I can't get her enough, and I don't know what to do. She just keeps crying, and latching on is so hard, and I don't know what to do!

  • If your breast is too full that may be a reason for pain but I have had two kids breastfed and the first two weeks were extremely painful at some points and I just wanted to give up. It gets easier just stick with it! If your LO won't take the right breast try pumping just to keep it lactating (even ifyou think its stopped it can still start back up again if its only been a few weeks. Your baby may change his mind eventually. But keep it up for as long as you can. Breast milk is so good for your baby!

  • I had similar problems when I bfed my DD. She prefered one breast over the other, and the pain of bfing was horrible. I cried just about everytime she latched on for weeks. Don't worry about her getting enough as long as she has enough dirty diapers, and is gaining weight. I bfed my DD on one breast for 9 months (I stopped on the side she ignored due to re-occuring mastitis).  One way I dealt with the pain was having my DH give DD a bottle of expressed milk for one feeding, and then I would pump for that feeding. It gave me enough of a break to keep moving forward. Unfortunately, bfing is harder for some then others. It took about 6 weeks for the pain to go away for me, and about 10 weeks for the whole process to become easy and enjoyable. I also had serious over-supply, and it was about 3 months before I could go a whole night without flooding the bed.

  • I don't think I knew you had your baby, so congrats!!

B has always favored my left breast for some reason.  It was very painful at first but eventually your nip will toughen up--try rubbing expressed BM into it after a feeding and then letting it air dry--that always worked better than lanolin for me.

You should definitely pump the breast she doesn't favor to encourage a supply.  You can also try different holds on that side--B wouldn't nurse on my right in cradle hold at first, but she did better with football hold.  We would always do the left side for awhile, then the right for just a few minutes, then back to the left--but even those few minutes on the right gave me some relief from ALWAYS nursing on the left.  So even if your "bad side" never produces as much as the other, every little bit will help.
