Internals-preterm labor-clicky-somewhat longish?

I have a friend who delivered at 35 weeks.

We were talking about internals etc because she's on #2 right now and a few days ahead of me. She told me that she is getting checked at her next ap in about a week, and she's kind of scared because last time she went into labor a few hours after her first internal.

I said "wow that would scare me too! Maybe you should ask not to have internals until you're already in labor?"

She told me that her doc told her there's no way an internal put her into labor.

Now theorize with me for a minute.

She has a family history of preterm labor. Soooo if her body was already about to go into labor (as in within the next few days), she had an internal (the doc is poking around at her cervix), and internals are known for causing cramping etc. Could her internal have-ummm- "sparked" labor? Assuming that she was possibly about to go into labor anyways?

I don't know, her doctors statement of "There's no way an internal could put you into labor" seems a bit cocky to me. Her doctor does not KNOW why she went into labor. A better sentence to me would be "It is UNLIKELY an internal put you into labor. If you are worried, they are not necessary and we can wait."

  • I don't know one way or the other but I would think having a history or pre-term labor I would want to know if I was showing signs of progress unusually early so I could go on bedrest or use medication to keep it at bay as long as I could.

I know it doesn't necessarily mean much but with a history or going super early I'd be worried about early dilation or effacement.

Ya I'd be worried too. I just think it's too strange of a coincidence that she went into labor HOURS after an internal . . .

She's freaked out about the internal, I'm surprised the doc doesn't just wait.

Maybe I'm biased because I HATE her doctor.

  • She should just tell her doctor she doesn't want the internal. She doesn't have to have it if she doesn't want it, and they can't make her get one. If she hasn't had any signs of labor yet, why poke around in there? Last week when I went for my 38 week appt, they were going to check me, and I said no. They just checked me at 37 weeks when they did the GBS test, and I was completely closed. Over that week, I didn't have any signs that I may have opened up at all, so I just told them I didn't think it was necessary to check again. I think if your friend was having other symptoms of labor, she should get checked. Otherwise, what's the point?

Unfortunately I find this doctor extremely pushy. Plus she is 19 and I think us youngins are susceptible to "I completely trust my doctor" syndrome.

  • i voted SS - I'm not a doctor, I have no idea.  I don't honestly think my doctor's going to do anything that he believes will put me at risk for PTL.  I trust my doctor's education and expertise.  So when he wants to start internals (36w), I'm fine with letting him.

Ya I'm definitely not asking for medical advice, I was curious what others would have thought about this.

I too trust my doctor, as anyone should. There is however a difference between trusting, and never asking questions. I don't know if that's what is going on there, but from other things she has said I have a feeling she is a bit over trusting. I posted about my feelings on the subject a week or so ago.

I think 100 percent trust with no questions is just as neglectful as not taking medical advice that is life-saving.

Anyways, that's a bit off subject. I'm glad you trust your doc.

  • I've been in the hospital for 2 and a half weeks now b/c of preterm labor. i dilated to 2 cm and my drs avoid internals when possible  b/c i have contractions now and they say that touching it can irritate it and cause more.... setting me into labor again.

So according to at least 6 dr's i've been seeing, mostly Peri's it can cause you to contract and once that starts your body can take over and count. into labor.

  • I would think that an internal could possibly put you into labor. You're poking around in there, messing with mother nature...anything can happen. Her doc sounds like a douche that doesn't know what he's talking about. I haven't had an internal yet and my doc doesn't do one until you're at least 38 weeks (which I am now and he will most likely be doing one tonight, which is my next visit) and his reasoning was due to putting a person into labor. If I were your friend, I would open my mouth and tell him no...he can't make her do anything she isn't comfortable with.

  • FWIW pre term delivery with my DS (36 wk 4 days) is the reason my midwives didn't do internal exams with my DD until 39 weeks. They told me they didn't want to mess around with anything that might send me into labor so yeah I'm pretty sure an internal can get things going for some.

This is exactly what I'm talking about!
