Gas drops, gripe water, and Zantac - oh my!

So, LO was diagnosed with reflux about a week ago and we've started giving him liquid Zantac twice a day to help with that.  I've also been giving him gas drops before every feeding because he's an extremely gassy baby.  Now, in the past week, he's started to be crabby pants every evening from about 5-8pm and a friend of mine recommended we use gripe water to help with his "colic" symptoms.

I really don't want to give him all three of these every day!  I never envisioned him being so "medicated" already.  I'm afraid of stopping the gas drops because I'd like to think they are working and am afraid of how gassy he could be without them.  But, I'm wondering if the gripe water may end up being better.  Also, I'm now starting to wonder if he really has reflux or if it's just a combination of things with his tummy like gas, colic, etc.

What do you give your LO on a daily basis?  Which product/s do you recommend I use and which ones should I skip?  TIA!

  • DD has severe reflux, colic and wicked gas.  We use prevacid, gas drops and occasionally will give her gripe water if we cannot settle her down.  I also never though I would be medicating, but I also never thought I would have a baby who was this sad, in this much pain, and needy.  You do what you have to do...

I only do zantac. If he is dealing with the gas fine, then I wouldn't give it to him. LO's dr said gas is normal.

DS has acid relux and milk protein allergy, and had torticollis, used to EP, now we FF . April siggy 3-6 month

  • We use Prevacid for reflux. We had tried Zantac and Axid previously. I will occasionally give him Mylicon as needed, but honestly....it's the reflux that is the major issue. It makes things really challenging, and the poor baby is just miserable most of the time. He never sleeps, so he is constantly over tired.

I am convinced they need to start a Bump board just for reflux! SO many people deal with it here.

  • A gets Zantac twice a day and I put gripe water in her nighttime bottle to help with hiccups/gas.  I'll give her gas drops if she needs them, but now that I think about it, she hasn't had any of those in at least two weeks.

  • I only give gas drops if LO won't/can't burp during and/or after a feeding.  I try to burp her midway through and after.  If she doesn't burp at all or within 10 minutes of the feeding, I give the gas drops.  That seems to work, and she has not been needing th gas drops as much lately.  I do not have experience with the other meds you mentioned, but for 3-4 days I had to give her baby tylenol once daily due to early teething.  Now we have baby orajel and teething tablets, and these seem to keep her from needing tylenol (I only use orajel OR tablets, depending on the apparent severity of her discomfort).
