Sleeping and birth weight

DD is starting to sleep in longer stretches - 3-5 hours at a time depending on a number of factors.  She's not yet back to her birth weight (7lb 14 oz)  but that was determined to be a bit of a fluke considering how much fluid they pumped into me.  They suctioned 7 ccs of fluid from her stomach the first night - by the time we saw the LC at 3 days old, she had dropped 12% to 6lb 14oz but they weren't concerned.

As of 2 weeks ago she was gaining weight.  I stepped on the scale with her the other day ( I know that's not 100% accurate but I wanted to get an idea) and she's definitely gained more.  My question is, is it ok to let her sleep as long as she wants to?  Her output is excellent and she eats tons during the day.

Re: Sleeping and birth weight

  • Some will say yes. I say no. You should not let a baby that is not back to their birth weight go longer than 2-3 hours without eating.

agreed. You won't know for sure that she is back to her birth weight until she is weighed correctly at the doctor.

  • If you think she's gaining weight, you can take her into the pedi for a quick weight check to be sure.

  • I agree with PP, wait until her next appointment and get the Okay from your ped.

    I agree.

  • I agree, until she is back to birth weight per your doc, or if you talk directly to your him/her, I'd feed every 3 hrs for sure. Most docs will let you bring a baby in for a weight check only.

  • I know everyone is different, but my pedi does not want me to let LO go for more than 4-5 hours until she is over 8 lbs. Her birth weight was 6.5 so we have a while. We do 2-3 hours during the day and around 4 hours at night.
